Skunks and Rigatoni

Hello… my name is Gia and I will like to begin a blogging of what it is like to be a Italian who have been transplant to the U.S.A. I have live here for over 30 year now, but I still have a difficult time to communicate in English language because some time the word are difficult for me to understand. I am marry to Steven who is NOT a Italian. He usually will helping me when I not understand things, but some time he forget or he not notice. It have been a long time that I was say a word and only recent that Steven say to me, “Gia – you must learn to say it correctly!….the word is “breaTH – less”. All this time I been saying that I running around and I am “breastless”. ….. (Hey! – it sound like the same to me!….and actually not so far off from the truth…. : / ) … Most of the time, people is associate Italian with “Mafia”….and my great grandfather (my Bisnonno) was involve with Mafia in Italy. My grandfather (Nonno) also was involve in Italy and the New York mafia – but he was bad only to the ones who was crooked politician and police mans….he treat his family very well and very kind heart he have. He also give money to neighbors who was not have enough for Christmas time for they childrens – also he give away food to them if they need it. He was not bad to all – just to the bad ones. I will stop now and write some more another day if any one will care to reading it….and I will explaining the name of my blog – Skunks & Rigatoni. 🙂 Thank you very much.

  4. Hello Gia, I am from Austria and my English is far away from being perfect as well. On the other hand i assume that many of the SC members might not be able to speak our respective native languages in a close to satisfactory way either.
We are here to have fun with learning and trying and maybe to overcome a certain natural restraint about using the English language. i try to do my best, but i take it easy….

  5. Hello Gia. I understand where you coming from. I am from Singapore and English is not my first language. I have live in Uk for nearly 40 years now. I still cannot pronounce certain words properly. Example swede a kind of turnips. To me it sound sweet, suet………..sweat. Suet is fats surround the kidneys, sweat is the water comes out of your body on a hot day. Also there are some words with 2 or more meanings , example banks 1. bank where you put your money . 2. river banks………side of the river or side of a hill.
Once my car broke down on the motor way/highway, I rang the RAC for help. I told them the suspenders dropped leaving a green trail on the road. Actually the suspension dropped. At that time I could not think what its called.
So you are not alone. I enjoyed reading your bloggs. Hope you come in chat room and have a natter. Look forward to seeing you there.
    cheers cinta xxx

    1. Hello cinta!
Oh that very kind of you to say that….. yes, I still make wrong choice for my words some time but ALWAYS some one is ready to correcting me…lol……… do you know that you must NOT say “like a dear in headlice”… is suppose to be: “like a dear in head LIGHTS” .. and always I was say : “this is yourown (cup) and this is myrown (cup)” Now I realizing that it is two different word… Is not easy to learn to speak another language because of slang word also. Is funny to me what you say, but also I realize that it can be painful some time when we say the wrong word to some one and they become insult. Well…what we can do, right? We do the bestest that we can and we hoping that we not insult to any one… haha…. You are a joy, cinta, and I am feeling very happy to meet you! I will like to go to the chat room once more time. I was in one this morning for a bit.. every one is very kind to me and I appreciation. I hope I will see you in a chats room later on for the natter. (natter is chatters?) ….. I dunno what is the time difference where you are. England is 5 hour ahead of me. I am in the U.S. Thank you for comment to me dear cinta! From Gia xo 🙂
