THINGS THAT SHOULD BE TRUE

Many quotes claimed by celebrities especially, to be true are rubbish, but once in a while they come out with something that, even if not true, should be.

One example is one I heard today quoted by Stephen Fry concerns an Australian Aboriginal leader’s definition/explanation of a total solar eclipse in 2002. He apparently said:-

“Kerosene lamp belong Jesus gone bugger up”

I don’t care if it’s truth or fabrication. It should be true.

  1. If it’s a quote, then no, it can’t be “put into proper English.” The guy didn’t say it in proper English. If we rewrite it into proper English, we aren’t quoting him anymore; we’re paraphrasing. “Kerosene lamp belong Jesus gone bugger up” the literal translation is Jesus’s kerosene lamp blew up. And since a solar eclipse takes away the sun, maybe he was right.
