The Terrorist and the dog clipper

The terrorist was mucky, long haired and, quite frankly a tangled mess. No, this is not neglect. She refuses to be brushed, always has. She’ll even have a snap at me when it’s tried, so it’s down to the dog groomer with the mucky little devil.

An hour and a half later, back I go to collect her. What a difference. Clean, short haired and looking quite presentable in fact. Unfortunately that won’t last very long.

However, as I was paying the lady I start to hear a strange tail. One about her loving being washed. Loving being brushed and even co-operating with having her nails cut.

Now this doesn’t sound like my terrorist, so despite the mad excitement of this clean mutt I checked her over carefully, just to make sure this is my mutt. Now she’s short haired I can see the colouring on the skin (a west highland is mainly pink skin, but has patches of darker skin in places) and they look OK. Then I spot the scar on her rear left leg where old Brandy (my cat) hacked her when she wouldn’t let him sleep, so yes, this paragon of virtue is actually my terrorist.

Needless to say I questioned the groomer and she explained that dogs will often act out of character when off their own territory and under the control of strangers. Some, she told me, get really nasty and have to be held in harnesses and muzzled, while others, like my terrorist, become little angels.

“Nowt so strange as folk” they say. Seems nowt so strange as my little terrorist as well.

  1. Alfie loves being brushed- he does little happy grunting noises and is a little pet-totally out of character, as he’s usually grumpy and noisy and bolshie except when he wants something.

I do think he’s in love with the lady who runs the grooming salon in the village- he cant wait to get out of the car and throws himself at her door to get to her, howling wildly all the time. If there are other dogs there, he goes into a huff, growls at them and gets as close to her as he physically can without smothering her. The attentions of his love Trisha belong solely to him.

When collected again, he’s an adorable little teddy bear, angelic and happy after being washed and pampered, blow dried , head massaged, and rewarded with a doggy treat.
For a change, he’s quiet, at peace with the world and falls asleep right away. For one day, he’s a changed dog-back to being an awkward, self centred little monster next day.

  2. This mongrel is terrified of the groom shop. She becomes a quivering blob of protoplasm. Last time she backed out the door and shook so hard she came right out of the collar and leash!

  3. Well written. Every time you write about your girl I see mine. Not a joke one day I did pick up the wrong dog at the groomers. There were four. Luckily i picked the nicest one, since I lived in a fool’s dream of my girl being the best!!!
PS Sometimes I regret giving back that dog!!!
