The Race

To my mind, life is like a race…
A steeple chase..
With hurdles to be jumped..
And we get bumped..
Sometimes by accident..that’s true..
Never the less, it winds us..
Me and you..
We hit the ground, and look around..
And we are fazed..
And then…..amazed
A fellow traveller has left the track..
And puts their arm around our back..
And gives a word of comfort..
Love…..maybe a hug..
And we say….run!
You will miss out on all the fun..
I am afraid…that you will be delayed…
And they say….hush….
There’s nothing urgent…what’s the rush?
And you sit on…..and talk……they listen…
To your stress…
Until the time when you feel fine…
Or…when the pain is hurting less….
And then you rise….and laughter fills your heart..
You realise…..
That as you are heading for the prize…
That’s you are running…….doing fine…
And gaining time..
And then your eye alights upon another soul…
Who’s tripped..
Their heart is ripped….
And so you pull up short and say…
Move over…I have come to stay..
And reach your hand…
To hold them…
yes……enfold them….cease to run..
For a short time….or maybe more…
Until they’re lifted from the floor…
And love lives on.

Friendship and love are actions not words.

  1. Morvenna. It would be so lovely, if it worked that way more often. So when we are down, we need to hold on till some kind words and actions come our way again.
Can we Forget the race and take enough time to live sanely?

  2. Just amble along at your own pace…….if love is destined to come it will…….such a small word, but answerable to soo much…….
.joy as well as heartache…….ahh such is life….just gotta roll with it…

  3. Morvenna, your poem is just beautiful! The friendship-race analogy is so good.
Most of us have been in both roles in friendships- giver and receiver, discouraged and encourager.
I have been the blessed receiver of friends who truly care and really understand. They have show patience and provided humor or compassionate tears when needed. Their precious gifts to me make me want to give in a similar way to them, or to another person in need.
    Thanks for sharing .

  4. Morveenna, this is written from the heart. I felt all your emotions whilst reading. How truly blessed you are to be able to write like this. Congratulations and don’t stop, even if you feel like you don’t want to share them. Some may be just too close to your heart to do this but if not we will all benefit from reading them. Thanks for sharing
