Strange…but true!
I’ve never pretended to be normal. In fact I’ve sort of revelled in being a bit different, or exploiting the ways in which I’m perhaps a bit different. Not in a truly artistic sense like some of the great artists or musicians, or writers, just in my own sweet way. When I was very very young I quickly became obsessed with songs, music, tunes, listening to them on the radio, playing my folks old records and tapes, and basically anything that had a music content. As I got older I felt a need to share that passion / obsession by having a mobile disco roadshow. Actually it was also partially fuelled by the fact that I was fed up with going to parties where the disco was absolute rubbish as well. So with my two parameters which were: 1 -my love of music and: 2 – my motivation to have others enjoy it too… I became a mobile DJ. I was a DJ with a difference though. I didn’t want to just play music I liked and force it upon others, I wanted other people to genuinely have a great and memorable time enjoying music. That’s it entirely. Back in those days we didn’t have the luxury of streaming or downloading endless amounts of songs. We had the radio and we had shops to buy music – that was it. So, if you wanted a party but you hadn’t already invested a significant amount in records or CD’s, you needed someone who had. Cue…the DJ. I started investing from the age of about five or six, around 1970 / 1971. I still have pretty much everything I ever bought (a 7″ single was 50 pence back then which was a whole week’s pocket money) – and that’s where it all began. So things really have moved on a hell of a lot since then. I still love music every bit as much as before, and I still want everyone else to as well, but they don’t really need me anymore because it’s on YouTube, it’s on Spotify, it’s all over the place in fact. So where am I now? Right back where I started from. As I write this there are tunes banging away in the background (well…a bit louder than that if I’m honest!) so it seems a bit like it’s all gone full circle, and I’m enjoying it all just the way I did when I was five or six years old, with a much bigger music library of course. At any given time of any given day there could be tunes banging out at home here, or on headphones perhaps. These days though, it’s more of or mostly a ‘Party For One’ which is… exactly how it all originally began for me.

I’m most definitely not ‘normal’. I don’t really feel the need for face-to-face friends but I’d NEVER want to be without my music. It can alway’s cheer one up, make one smile and sometimes even give one pause for thought. Keep listening @dj 😊
I totally agree with everything you said Scorpio. DJ, you have those wonderful memories you created to look back on.
I have never wanted to be normal. . . @dj . I fail to understand why people are against those who don’t want to follow the crowd and fall off a cliff like a stupid lemming??? I think differences in people is what makes life interesting.
Blessed are the cracked for they let in the light. I think its great that you have kept up your passion for music over all those years. Technology changes but good music never does.
dj, You sound perfectly normal to me and lucky to have a special interest or “passion”. Don’t people still hire DJs at weddings or special events?
I think they do – sort of – but it’s all a lot different to how I did things back in the day. Anyway, I’ll never stop enjoying it!
