Period Dramas……

We have yet another new period drama on the TV this evening…..I don’t mind them at all….I love to see the costumes, jewellery, little jewel encrusted bags  and the fancy hair adornments……and that’s just the men…lol……..in some eras the men were indeed adorned as much as the women……it was all very well being the upstairs lady just writing, sewing and playing the piano all day, sure that must have become a tad boring, but the alternative was working round the clock scrubbing, cleaning, cooking……..what era would have been your preference to live in…….when you get down to the nitty gritty…… some of the clothing was very rarely washed, the Wigs were lousy with lice and STD were rife, orgies, killings…..are we going back in time somewhat …….in some respects I feel that we are reversing in time…..we are back to the homeless, beggers on the streets, lots relying on food banks, many not getting the medical treatment they need unless they have the money to pay for it…will the workhouses make a return ?…….yes…. as said recently I feel I have lived through the best years…..but its the 60s i would live through again…if only……

  1. I too have wondered the halls of countless museums, and seen the finery of the Ladies and Gents. Star I totally agree with what you are saying. But hey, credit where credit is due…are we not, as the older generation a bit at fault?

    1. Hi Sailor……..many of the younger generation blame us for the “mess” they are in, not being able to buy property etc…..apparently we had it good and had it all, and now our properties are worth thousands and they have nothing……my first wage just about allowed me to buy a bit of make up and a night out…….. I remember when I was newly married and we had £500…….did we buy a cheap terrace with not a stick of furniture to put in it or wait for a council house, which we did, that was mainly furnished from second hand stuff given to us, i look around me and I see many many new houses being built, very quickly they have been moved in with brand new furnishings and all the latest gadgets and techy stuff……..I do agree that councils should be building more affordable property to rent for those who don’t have a cat in hells chance of getting a mortgage….yes my first foot on the property ladder was by buying my council house at a discounted price……..but I will say most of our generation worked for what we go……yes the jobs were there unlike today……but are we personally to blame for our industries closing down and more goods being imported in to the country cos its cheaper……..I would love to see our own factories being built again providing jobs for the many…….so I don’t take any blame on that one……

  2. I believe we had the best years, Star, as you say people are now homeless, and some depending on food banks ect. My mother never got help when raising seven children, I do not understand all of the women having children out of wedlock…and in many cases to different men…is it just for the help that they get? I wonder……

    1. Hi Tania, I notice what seems to be a reverse way of doing the marriage and kids stuff……seems many are having the kids then a few years down the line getting married……and now the hen and stag nights are weekends abroad…….my daughter has just refused a second hen night for the same girl……she has agreed to go to the spa weekend, but now another night in Town apparently is deemed necessary for the hen night…….and don’t get me started on the trending baby shower thing…money money money……

    1. Hello Way…….well I didn’t sail through the 60s on a drug induced wave……..funny how the hallucinating drugs were considered kind of cool then, the colourful kaftans and flowers in the hair made them seem more acceptable and of no danger, just a fun thing to do…….now we have the Black Mamba and Spice turning the young into Zombies…its a scary world we are living in, so deffo would be the flower powered 60 s for me…..just nipping into the garden to pick some Daisy’s for my hair…lol

  3. The 60’s was my era, my children were in the 80’s era. I won’t go into my grandchildrens era, but their eras was special to them as the 60’s was to us. The thing that has spoiled it all I suppose is technology. Young ones today are more bothered about their mobile phones and their internet connection. Society now depends on technology, not people. If someone is homeless or hungry, it seems a way of life to this generation. It makes me feel hopeless sometimes

    1. Hi Mart……..one of my dearest wishes would be to turn the clock back for a couple of months for the present generation to experiences life as we did…….in some ways we do this with TV programmes going back in time, families move into property furnished of the era, and eat the food that was mainly consumed……. but it cannot recreate the freedom we had….and of course they had already been conditioned by the world they live in, and that’s the only world they know…..I also despair of the lack of verbal communication…….

  4. Hi Drummer…….you do right to enjoy the present, but period dramas recreate History somewhat, albeit dramatized….its an escapism for a short time from some days a not so pleasant world we live in……

  5. I do agree, Star, the younger gen is not happy with us and I think they do feel like they are getting a bad shake. I was watching Tv last night for a bit and during the movie pause, there were ads. One stated; ” Need 10, 000 for your holiday? Bank turn you down? Well worry no more, registers with us and with minutes instant CREDIT. Instant 10K and no collateral? No job No worry, sign here… Hey, then there is the absolutely fantastic Credit Card. Recently I received an advertisement on my phone, declaring that I had just won 1.5 mil, but to claim it I had to pay a small upfront processing fee of 20, 000 cash.
I see that many younger folks are living in a Something for nothing fantasy. and when it overwhelms them, they turn to Momma, Daddy, to bail them out. Like Star, Tania and all we all learned fast to start small and build, to work and save for the things we wanted. And then get these things
In the city, there is a big multi-story Shopping Mall. The sad thing is that outside of this Mall are groups of middle age, semi-healthy men and women, who beg for help. The reasons are way too numerous to list. It does break my heart when I see this. I have asked several young men, and a few women the question. ” Why do you sit here and ask for a few cents or dollars to feed yourself or pay for a room to sleep the night, when you could maybe go to a Temp labor company instead and work for 8 hours and earn 50-75 Dollars cash? ”
One young man 28 explained to me he was receiving assistance, but he wanted to pull together some side money too. I ask him if he had a steady job. and he answered with no that too much, getting up every day so early. Further, he stated why should I go to work when I get my rent and health ins paid by the state. And he then grinned at me and ask me if I had a Fiver!!! I was so damn close to doing something that would have cost me my freedom…
Although, I was so mad that I could spit, I did realize that what little I do have, I have earned and I am proud of this. And I praise each and everyone here and else where that hold the same values as we have expressed here. Maybe there is hope…
