Nothing like being raised with brothers

Not only am I the middle child of 5 but also the runt of the litter at 51/2. Growing up with 3 brothers was a hoot… depending on who you were to ask. Mark ( second to the oldest) was kind enough to teach me to ride my first bike. He was so sweet. He felt it was funny to tell me that the red light meant to go and green light meant to stop. Thank goodness we lived in a small town in Indiana and mostly rode that bike on the sidewalk. My oldest brother Rick once sat me on top of the fridge when I was about 6 and left me there! Well, ok maybe I was following him and his girlfriend around making kissy noises.  And I can’t forget the number of times I would be reaching into the deep freezer to get a popsicle  only to have one of them tip me in the freezer. How in the world did I ever survive?!

But I was the smart one… oh yes indeed. They were quick to tattle on me to mom. I kept all the the things they did in my pocket to bring out when they would threaten to tell mom on me. (Evil laugh) Heck, there were times as adults we would all get together and I would tell on them to mom. She would just shake her head.

However, as much as it amused them to pick on me, no one else had better pick on their little sister! That would mean war. They are such fond memories and I wouldn’t trade them ( or my brothers) for anything.

  1. Great memories,I remember my big brother comforting me. Id slipped into the stream, turned yellow from local Iron ore mine. We called it the fever river. He kept saying with little confidence, never mind praps you wont die.

  2. I was the youngest of four brothers. There were 9 years between us all – from the oldest (Trevor) born in 1942 to me born in 1951. Growing up in the 1950s we didn’t see much of our father as he was still in the Army (I was 7 when he left it) so my male role-model growing up was my oldest brother. Unfortunately he died in 2012 a few weeks after his 70th birthday.
