Jokes Acceptable or not?

There is a program on our TV at the moment called It was alright in the 70s. It shows programs and comedians etc who were seen as ok in the 1970s but nowadays are just wrong.

I would hope that like others on this site I am entitled to my opinion and I think that Stereotyping races for the purpose of a cheap laugh is wrong. These are the types such as All Irish are thick, All Jews are tight with money. The Scots are also tight with money. All black people are criminals. All Muslims are terrorists. Are all these Stereotypes OK to use in jokes? I think none of them are. They are the domain of lazy comedians who aren’t clever enough to find a genuinely funny story that doesn’t need a target group or stereotype. I have Irish friends who have had to put up with these thicko Irish jokes all their lives and have to laugh it off or else they are seen as having “No sense of humour”. I have three of four of my grandparents who were Irish and believe me they were very far from being thick.

Anyone who knows me well know I have a very good sense of humour but certainly not for these types of Jokes which might have been “OK in the 70s but no longer acceptable in this day and age.

I would also point out that the Terms and Conditions 5d does state about content that promotes racism. Jokes that perpetuate this “All Irish are thick” does just that.

Please continue with your jokes just please don’t  continue with these types.

  1. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion walker – but have I missed something – for I am not aware of any offensive jokes, but I do take your point and will myself be a little more aware!
