For Father’s Day: Only a Dad by Edgar A. Guest

For Father's Day: Only a Dad by Edgar A. Guest

Only a dad with a tired face,
Coming home from the daily race,
Bringing little of gold or fame
To show how well he has played the game;
But glad in his heart that his own rejoice
To see him come and to hear his voice.

Only a dad with a brood of four,
One of ten million men or more
Plodding along in the daily strife,
Bearing the whips and the scorns of life,
With never a whimper of pain or hate,
For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,
Merely one of the surging crowd,
Toiling, striving from day to day,
Facing whatever may come his way,
Silent whenever the harsh condemn,
And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad but he gives his all,
To smooth the way for his children small,
Doing with courage stern and grim
The deeds that his father did for him.
This is the line that for him I pen:
Only a dad, but the best of men.

  1. really nice.

Have an old copy of “The White House Cookbook” which if found in an old shed. Fun book to just poke around in. Along with lots of recipes (all of which would feed a large group)…but what I enjoyed the most were the old “household hints”
This included everything from treat gout to dying clothes black if somebody passed on.

But one thing that I enjoyed the most…sorry do not have the book open in front of me…How to look after your husband. Well this “thing” arrived home on the doorstep..a good wife takes him in and sets him a chair…has to be free of drafts so he will not get a cold. You do not nag or stress so he will not fall ill.

It was like the poor guy was an object not a real person…but I guess back then, if your husband got sick…there was no money coming in and women did not work outside the household.

Times have changed and can appreciate reading the way life was.

  2. Thank you Laurie. This is good for Father’s Day but also for refection and gratitude on and for the sacrifice made and security provided by my “Best of all Fathers” who will have been gone from this earth 20 years this December 19th, 2014.
