A WALK FOR CHARITY.

A few years ago I was in Thorntons confectionary shop in our town. I noticed some papers about a Charity walk.

When I got home I showed my hubby , and daughter the details of an 11 mile walk across the sands of Morecambe Bay, We decided to do the walk as it was for the N.S.P.C.C. and so we put our names forward and collected sponsorships for the day.

We drove out to the village of Flookburgh, where we left the car on the central car park. of course there we met others who were doing the walk. The Queen’s guide, Sir Cedric Robinson had been out earlier to check the sands and put markers out.

At 10am we set of down a small lane across a small channel and out on to the sands, we walked out to a small island called Chapel Island. this was once used by the monks at Ulverston Priory for picking up goods from boats so we were told. We had our sponsor cards checked there and then we turned right,{still on the sands} and headed for the railway viaduct. The scenes from the sand were fantastic, even the Monument looked lost among the mountains.

Once reaching the viaduct we had the ungainly task of climbing under it , and it was quite difficult as our walking shoes were soaked from the wet sand. We finally made it to the other side, and up on to Terra Firma. we walked all around Lord Cavendish’s Estate for several miles, then we came to the road that lead to Cark, we had to cross the road , and after being on flat land for so long we then had a steep hill to climb behind the tied cottages that belonged to the Cavendish Estate, we the were on flat ground until we saw the drop into the Stable yard at the Estate.

Hurrah! we had done the walk, and Lord and Lady Cavendish were there to welcome us and give us all hot drinks and some hot dogs ect. we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and went on to do this walk for a further three years.

I often was tempted to do the Keswick to Barrow one, but forty miles seemed a little daunting to me. The Coniston to Barrow started on the same day a few years later, but I never went on either.

Well I really enjoyed my experience a few times, and raised quite a bit of cash for the charity.

Tania.

  1. Yes I did enjoy reading this, Tania – pat on the back to you and your family for supporting a
good cause ….. and it sounds like a very enjoyable experience too.

Have only participated in a couple of Charity walks myself – when I lived in Toronto Canada – the company I worked for supported the United Way Annual Campaign — an organization that supported
many causes. It was a 10K walk – and I felt the after effects!! but did enjoy the process and the
fact that it was for a good cause.

Not tempted at this time to do another though!

    1. I used to do four hours walking every Friday , and Saturday , with smaller walks on the evenings through the week, as I was working full time, so there no after effects for me, thank goodness….Thank you goldengirl1224
