A Helping Hand

The bitterly cold wind bit into Cindy’s back as she hurried along the dark misty cliff
path,Cindy wondered why things happened to her in the most frightful weather. The car breaking down on this lonely road, now she had to walk to the hotel. This was supposed to be a place, where she was finding herself, after 36 years of marriage.

Cindy missed Fredrick so much, after his death the loneliness that evoked her was unbearable. The feeling of being lost, loosing your best friend, that you spent a lifetime with snatched from you in a second, like the other part of you had disappeared. Life carried on like a dream, doing things remotely no interest at all,the loneliness going on and on, everyone said give yourself time
.
The night was so black it was hard to make out the path, Cindy slipped and fell onto the rock, she was hurt and frightened ,now wet,she noticed a shadow pass near, turning round no one was there, strange she thought, as she stood up,continuing along the slippery path, she wished she had a torch. The hairs stood up on the back of her neck, she looked around expecting to see someone near. but again she was alone, then she noticed she was so close to a drop hundreds of feet into the ocean.Lucky I stopped,I would have been dead if I fell there.

Cindy edged herself along the slippery path, wanting the lights of the hotel to come into view, the feeling of someone around her so strong. Walking faster Cindy tripped, fell forward ,but strong hands stopped her. Cindy called out in alarm looking behind to see who it was,but no one was there. Oh thats not right she though I know someone stopped me falling. How she wished Fredrick was here to protect her, he was so good at looking after her, hadn’t he done it for thirty six years.

Walking faster now the wind howling, pushing her faster along that dark path, wanting to get to where there were lights and people, she heard a sound behind her like someone walking, it made her start to walk faster, frightened now Cindy looked behind and could definitely see a shape in the darkness. Cindy’s heart felt like it was going to burst she could hardly breath, running as fast as possible on the dark path, how she managed to stay ahead she didn’t know.

Cindy breathlessly rushed around the bend, darkness enfolding her,she moved faster, her legs running by themselves her mind racing ahead, she had tears streaming down her face, body exhausted, stumbling along through the dark and mist, Cindy felt the hands of someone guiding her away from the edge,as she ran on in terror.Gradually the fear seemed to leave her body, her breathing and heart slowing down, out of the mist the lights of the hotel shone out brightly .Cindy looked about her, there was no one there. How strange.
