All is quiet here in this tall temporal slice of the world, as it is usually at this hour of the day. In the dining room window nothing appears but the reflection of six small yellow light bulbs glowing in the chandelier over the dining room table. Beyond the reflection, outside, nothing – the world is black. By common consent, tens or hundreds of millions of people in this vertical band of the planet are asleep. The sleep habits of a hundred millennia of human life are dying slowly. Electricity has been lighting our homes for a century, but nearly all who are active in the world of labor – the young and the aging but not the elderly – still divide their lives between waking and sleeping by where the sun is in the heavens above them as the earth turns. This may change, eventually, but probably not in our lifetimes.
