Worlds Best Place To Grow Old
A report of 91 countries ranks the best and worst places to grow old was collected in four categories: income security, health, employment/education and environment to highlight what older people experience in countries around the world.
15. FINLAND just squeezed into the top 15.
14. AUSTRALIA was bested by its neighbour New Zealand by seven places.
13. THE UK was placed above France, Spain and Australia – but did not feature in the top 10 because the employment and educational status and opportunities of and for Britons over the age of 60 lagged behind other countries
12. IRELAND edged out its neighbour the UK by one spot. The country particularly excelled in enabling older people to live independently, through access to public transport and involvement in communities.
11. AUSTRIA narrowly missed out on the top ten because of its poor rating in employment and education.
10. JAPAN was the only Asian country in the top ten. The next Asian country on the list was China, at 35.

8. THE UNITED STATES came second in the employment and education rankings but fell down in other categories – particularly income.
7. NEW ZEALAND came seventh.
6. SWITZERLAND came top in the health ranking with a high healthy life expectancy for those over 60.
5. CANADA is the only non-European country in the top five. Like its neighbour the United States, the North American country ranked poorly for income.
4. THE NETHERLANDS comes in fourth.
3. GERMANY, the largest economy in Europe, came third.
2. NORWAY narrowly missed the top spot.
1. SWEDEN is deemed the best place in the world to grow old – the north European country ranked highly for welfare and pensions, employment and education.

  1. Thank you Pollypie for a very informative blog. I doubt if it is useful because most of us are unable to pull up roots or migrate for other reasons.
    I am glad the USA rated near the top since I am rooted here.

    1. Your welcome Rose. Im glad Canada sneaked in the top 5, and agree that job prospects in most of Canada is poor, but here in Alberta it is far better than anywhere, including Europe. Financial security in Canada is better than UK and medical facilities are about the same. But I think there are far more activities to enjoy in UK which I miss, which makes me want to go back to live.
      Each country has its pro’s and con’s and it would be nice to hear about them from our chatters.
