Why is Dad Naked?

This is my first Joplin tornado story… mostly unedited from when I posted on another site in the weeks following the F5 that devastated our town on May 22, 2011. I posted pics in my profile album. KayBee
I will use false names for our friends’ to protect their privacy.
I think you’ll see why we laughed and cried together when hearing these people tell part of their story.
My husband’s manager (David) and his wife were there. They lost their home. They all made it to the basement just in time. He was in the shower, he heard his wife screaming. He ran out and grabbed their two yr.old son, and then barged in on the 16 yr. old son and corralled everyone to the basement. When it was over, they came out to see sky where the roof had been. At some point later on, the teen son quipped “I just kept thinking ‘Why is Dad naked?’ ” Also, when they came out of the basement, David had shoes on, tied securely. Which was good, under the circumstances, to protect his feet from all the dangerous debris. Tied shoes but not a stitch of clothing. He insists he has NO RECOLLECTION of putting shoes on…..
I’ll post other stories separately, in an attempt to keep each post fairly short.
Thanks for taking time to read this.
Someone told me it might be therapeutic to write about it, and share it with others.. Could be true for me. I have always been a journaler, since I was a kid. He also said that others would likely be interested in knowing a little about the now-famous tornado from a person who calls Joplin “home”.

  1. I suppose in a crisis the survival instinct kicks in and you react with instinct to survive and so put on shoes but no time for clothing….mind you I would have died with embarrassment had that been me. Would hate to have to get over living through something like that.

  2. I agree with myhurtingback on the issue of the survival instinct. Thank God the father went beyond the after effect embarrassment to save the lives of his children and protect his family. Thank you Kaybee for such a heart touching blog, xxx
