What are you waiting for?

I was going to post this in ‘Thought of the Day’, but it’s too long.

Said to be written by an 83-year-old woman.

I’m reading more and dusting less. I’m sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time working.

Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savour, not to endure. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.

I’m not “saving” anything; We use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unplugged, or the first Amaryllis blossom.

I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries. I’m not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank.

“Someday” and “one of these days” are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.

I’m not sure what others would’ve done had they known they wouldn’t be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favourite food was.

I’m guessing; I’ll never know.

It’s those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn’t written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn’t tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them. I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, tell myself that it is special.

*************

What are you waiting for…. Use your best things NOW.

  1. Oh wow, this is an amazing read, PollyPie. Thanks for sharing. I, at times tend to want to save things as well. We have crystal/china that has been stored since the day we got married. I WAS AFRAID pieces would be broken; the china pattern is no longer available… so, we could not replace it.

      1. It is a 4 place setting and not enough for when I have company. If you were to see my kitchen cabinets you would see that I have NO room for these. I’ve already told my oldest niece that she can have these, by the way. Polly, I’m not waiting for anything, dear. Just need more than 4 plates, etc.

        1. You don’t need more than two plates for you and your husband Pam …use it on special occasions for the two of you like your anniversary …or st. Valentines … Or some other good news ..like a pay rise …or a clean bill of health .
There are a myriad of opportunities to celebrate …just do it !
          🙂 🙂

  2. Thats it!

    1. Good on you Capp…life’s to short ! But….it might be even shorter for you if you decided to go on a round the world cruise in the nude …they may chuck you overboard in the middle of the ocean ! Brrrrrrrr …I hope you are a good swimmer ! 🙂

  3. Admit I run around in the same old clothes, when I have nice stuff that I very rarely wear (waiting for an occasion to wear them). Im going to start by wearing them for every day etc. 😀

  4. I have two kids……………one safe, safe and one spend ,spend. Me I am the banker and spend when needed. Thanks poly for sharing the wise anecdote. Never knows what tomorrow will be. Cheers
