TV Watching, What DO We Watch

Television watching may increases as we age and many of us may watch a lot more than we admit or think is good for us. I Watch television and am happy to find programs that I enjoy. I know there are many things more useful, but I am taking a break from being MORE USEFUL. I watch television and I watch it when I am not inclined to be more productive.

I do not like most of what is offered on American television even though I pay a high subscription price. I have had to work hard to find anything that I will watch. I recently discovered Acorn and am currently watching an Irish Doctor series. I just finished watching a Scottish Doctor series, and I watched an Australian Doctor Series. I have watched other Doctor series. I may tire of them or maybe you have tired of the mention of them. Many of us have watched Doc Martin and wait breathlessly for another season.I have watched other series also.  It is nice to get another season.

I also watch movies and burned out on the old classics and then I went to the subscription services for movies and that is what I watch mostly besides the news and a few television programs. I won’t watch sex, gore, or violence, so that doesn’t leave much. I am not opposed to other people watching and that may be the reason, many men need a man cave. We women don’t need nightmares.

In this blog, I just hope to hear of television that people enjoy watching, and don’t need to know that we may be wasting our time. I subscribe to three subscription service plus the cable TV service. The television is getting more and more like a computer than a television. We older people have time to watch and have to work to keep current with the new devices, and if we don’t, we will have little television worth watching.

So, what do we watch on television, and do we find it possible to find interesting, entertaining programs to watch?

  1. My favourite TV is quiz and trivia shows…I keep pen and paper handy for interesting answers and questions….but I also do enjoy yelling at the TV when some contestant, says “Pass” on a simple question that everybody knows. 🙂

    1. I did not enjoy it much, Stormy Daniels is a tragic woman and there was little interesting about the affair, which was only two or three meetings. Some of my favorites are gone from 60 minutes and I don’t enjoy the show as much as I once did. How did you enjoy it?

          1. I don’t “know”. And beyond that I don’t care. It is none of my business what two people willingly do. When the interview was approaching I did a search for Stormy Daniels and saw what has made her famous. If you wish to believe her I guess I have no right to complain, but she is of low moral character if nothing more than because of her choice of life.

          2. Lone rogue, I believe her mostly. I could say she made bad choices, but I don’t know what choices were available to her. I tried to read about her to discover why she went in the direction she did. I do know that the men who patronize prostitutes should be punished to the same extent that prostitutes are punished.

    1. I did not enjoy the Stormy Daniels interview. She is a sad and tragic woman, degraded by the World’s oldest profession. I kept wondering how she could profit from her role in this sordid story of hers and I also wonder where the money came from that she was paid.

      1. It has gotten FAR more attention than it deserves. Don’t you see that the enormous attention that the haters give to any person which will say something hateful is an attraction in itself.

        1. I guess I do see and that is why Trump was given so much media attention.
I think the office of President needs more protection, but that hasn’t been the policy for years.

          1. I think of protection as keeping him safe from assassination and that has so far been successful. What I wish is that he would be judged on what he has done as president and not be subjected to the hatred of so much of the population AND press.

  2. Lonerogue rogue, Trump, like many people, cannot be judged as president because too many people did not like him before he became President. We have a two-party system here and one party does not like what the other is doing.
I do not favorite a tax cuts for the wealthy, Cutting healthcare for the poor, and cutting funds for reproduction and women’s healthcare and last but not least, I do not talking trash to North Korea. There are other things that I don’t approve of, but those come to mind. I don’t support his position on guns or supporting the Neo-Nazis disguised and other racist or bigoted groups. I also do not support his stand on immigrants or other minorities.
I don’t support his doing serious business in tweets, nor do I support his not backing our allies, nor do I support his business with the Russians.
I have said enough but that may not include everything.
I do not support his life-long treatment of women nor his legislation pertaining to women.
Trump has stooped lower than the low in his treatment of others, so he is getting better than he gave.
For political discourse to sink to the current level is deploravle, but Trump was the lowest of the low.
An anyone be proud to support Trump? NOT ME.

  3. Getting back to Television, I do not get much new from Fox News. I do get new from NPR which has had funds cut. I do Get news from other television networks and other sources.
I do not trust the news that I do get. Even the weather is hyped for an hour until I finally hear some numbers, so I usually get my weather news from the computer.

  4. My favorites are North Woods Law, Alaska State Trooper and Cops. I watch those three shows mainly for the beautiful scenery (not so much in Cops) and I had worked with Game wardens in job with the state and was an EMT who worked with a lot of police so kinda miss that adrenaline rush.

  5. Yes I believe everyone knows how you feel about Trump. You always seem to slide him into a blog or conversation or remark. I thought this blog was about watching TV programs.

  6. Suzan, I know that several may know what I think of Trump but I doubt that “everyone” does. If you will notice another member brought up the subject and that is usually the case. Trump was a TV personality and I rarely watched his program. Why, I don’t watch many shows on TV. “You’re Fired” did sound harsh and being fired is a sad event.
Trump, in his earlier day did have a magnetic, charismatic, and very genuine way of expressing himself which made him a successful TV personality and a successful politician. Trump is rarely boring and he entertains his audiences.

  7. I do my textile art stuff most afternoons and through to, perhaps 1am if things are going well. I’m alone apart from my doggy pals so I listen to a lot of radio and listen to a lot of TV as I’m working. I like to work alone in fact I much prefer it but I do like the company of radio and TV, it is company that does not expect me to react to it or inter act in any way. I listen to public radio, pick things off Netflix but I mainly use the BBC. Radio4 and 3. BBC TV and some ITV drama. Drama, poetry, book discussions, politics, philosophy,Quantum mechanics to natural sciences, history and arts. I take it all. I also like the european dramas but I have to look at the screen to access the subtitles so I have to be doing something kind of mindless in this case. I especially like the history and art programs, so I am very thankful for these quality broadcasting programs my life would be the poorer without them. Easier to say what I don’t watch…..not much sports , I will watch horse events, some ski and rowing and tennis. Never reality shows, especial those that throw awful people together in some novel environment. People you would not want to be in a lift with never mind in the jungle!.Those trashy dating shows that aim to humiliate participants, certainly not the religious shows that seem more about money than redemption. No pop music for me and I’m tired of cooking shows, fashion shows and makeover shows. That is about it for me.

    1. Hello Rockflower, you have just inspired me to get out my crafts table from under the bed where it has sat for the past 3yrs..I moved into my new home 3yrs ago and really I’ve only just, settled into it..I don’t what much television, probably because it lacks anything of interest to me.When I do though I love to watch documentaries, coast to coast, tiny homes, anything to do with healthy living, science,to name a few..If I feel like a movie I watch Netflix.I have recently started listening to national radio here in NZ and I have also come across a lovely station that plays “piano-violin music” no singing which seems to be suiting me lately.Im sure there’s a name for such music but it evades me at present..Played quietly It just makes a nice background to my day without intruding into my thoughts and is relaxing..Just the thing for when I do a jigsaw puzzle.

  8. Rockflower, You may have better choices in broadcasting than I do from US television. I watched a lot of educational TV. I also become bored with some of the same shows.
I think I am getting bored or dissatisfied with most TV shows, which isn’t bad. I should be doing more. You are lucky to have your satisfying art to do.

    1. Rosinbloom, you should try and see if you can access any of the BBC radio on your computer, Punch in BBC radio Iplayer. Of the little I know of you, I’m sure you would find some programs of interest on radio4. There are two Americans I especially enjoy on the BBC——–David Sedaris he reads his own essays or diary type writings. He is living in UK at present so his views are really interesting and he is quietly very funny, Then there is Michael Sandle( or may be Sandal). He is a professor of philosophy at Harvard. He poses philosophical questions to various audiences. I think I’m a “groupie” of his LOL! I should so like to study in a class of his,

      1. Rockflower. It is so exciting. I have a computer device named “Alexa” and I asked it to turn on BBC, and it did so I can play it like a radio and I have three of these devices that take verbal commands and can play radio programs even British radio.

        1. roseinbloom,I have Siri on my iPad and I just asked it for BBC radio,it came up ,so I’ve saved it to bookmarks so I can check it out latter. I live in NZ..great to have British radio..Thanks

  9. Here in England the BBC is paramount for producing first class dramas across all catagories. I especially enjoy crime stories such as ‘A touch of frost ‘staring David Jason , ‘Vera’ , ‘Prime Suspect’ and ‘Inspector Morse’ staring the great late John Thaw. We also have some brilliant documentries. The nature ones narrated by David Attenborough are some of my favorites. I also watch some of the news broadcast from America which I find very interesting. Sky news and CBN are stations I watch frequently. When I’m not watching TV I’m either playing games or chatting on my tablet or reading as I have a huge library of both fiction and non fiction books.

  10. Scorpio, I see you like Crime dramas and I have watched some of the ones you mentioned. Do you watch “Father Brown”? Can you Get American programs like “Dateline” or forensic files?
I guess someone needs to write a blog on what they are reading.

  11. Scorp, I watch the same things you do. I get BritBox from Amazon Prime and it comes from there. Don’t like much of our American stuff. The writing I find never meets theirs. They will show another Bosch this month. Have you seen Cracker? We just finished the entire series. Lynley….watched it all. Fr. Brown, you name it, we love them all!

  12. rose1943, We have Amazon Prime and I never heard of BritBox so we subscribe to Acorn. I need to check on BritBox. Rose43, did you see the comment about British radio.

  13. I apply for monthly subscriptions. When we have seen all we want to watch we just quit them. Have watched Netflix, Acorn, Hulu (terrible technical problems) and now BritBox which we’ve kept the longest. There are so many choices but Amazon Prime has plenty as well plus I get it free. I’ve rented some great old classics from it for $1.99 as well. Hit BritBox on your IPad or computer and you’ll get all the info. I don’t really listen to radio very much anymore.

  14. rose1943, I did Google Britbox and plan to subscribe after I get back from a trip. I have all the others that you mentioned. I also like PBS radio and radio when in the kitchen or in the car. I like to remember radio when I am doing the kitchen work or other chores. I try to remember to turn on Music to play while I work.

  15. Haven’t watched the news in maybe 15 yrs. Never watch anything during the day. Nothing I care about on main cable. I watch Fire tv(huge selection there), and Netflix. It costs me very little and I pick what I want to see. My tv, my choice. I listen to BBC radio 4 and 4 extra almost all day everyday. I used to like PBS radio but not anymore. They have gotten idiotic and way to much news there, which I despise. Podcasts are another favorite. Oh almost forgot, the new 40″ smart tv lets me watch you tube and other internet video sites That’s fun.
I had britbox via fire TV for a month but watched everything almost so that is over. Thinking I may have a month of Starz or HBO soon if the movies look appealing. Curiosity is a great channel. National Geographic has gone to hell.
