TV Part 2

Thank you for your comments on my previous blog. You are an eclectic group of individuals. And you gave me some food for thought. I have been watching television since 1952 or 3. Back then I had a crush on Cubby O’Brian (one of the original Mousketeers). As I grew older my crushes changed as well. Loved Rowdy Yates, Johnny Yuma, and assorted others until I “met” Jean Luc Picard. My favorite programs depended upon the genre. Much like my books and music.

COMEDY; Who didn’t love Lucy? And Alice…who never went to the moon. Archie Bunker made us laugh at ourselves. Benny Hill was nudged out by One Foot In the Grave. We all learned to pronounce b-u-c-k-e-t as boo-kay. My favorite? Has to be Big Bang Theory with it’s catch phrase “bazinga!”

SCI FI; Outside of all the Star Treks only one show fired my imagination. The one and only Twilight Zone.

VARIETY; Tuesday nights belonged to Milton Berle, and Ed Sullivan owned Sunday’s. But with her charming charwoman thanking us for watching, Carol Burnett won my heart.

CRIME DRAMA; From Alfred Hitchcock Presents to Blue Bloods there have been so many well-made shows in this genre. Too many to name, too many to choose from, So I’ll cut to the chase and name CSI (the original) as my favorite.

A few not mentioned but high on my list are:
M*A*S*H – which was recently replaced by Big Bang Theory.
United States of Tara – only got to see the first season but it made me laugh and cry.
Shogun – my favorite miniseries.
Masterpiece Theatre’s Henry VIII, and Elizabeth R – can’t say enough about either of them.

Thank you for strolling down memory lane with me. Hope I brought a few smiles,

  1. I remember watching TV at my grandmother’s house. One station. Black and White of course. As I grew up I watch many of what you watched… but also loved Sky King, My Little Margie, Secret Agent Man, Loretta (?) Theater, Ma and Pa Kettle, Father Knows Best, What’s My Line?, Friends, etc. Today I love the crime shows..CSI, Criminal Minds, etc. Do not like any of the reality shows and very tired of contests that eliminates one person per week. TV has changed so much over the years. Fun thinking about the old times. Thanks for blog.

  2. I enjoyed the walk down memory lane – thanks for the post…. Much has changed in TV land, not always for the better, though I must admit I do like the CSI series and I’ll always love Midsommer Murders, no matter how many reruns….. and there are always a lot of those…. xxxxxxxxxxx

  3. Going back to early childhood, there was ‘Z Cars’, ‘Ghost Squad’, ‘Dr. Who’, ‘Sunday Night at the London Paladium’ with Hughie Green. At the end of the day before closing down…. Yes, the tv was not 24 hours lol. In UK they played the Queens anthem.

Movies I liked were anything Doris Day was in, and my favourite Hayley Mills.

    Thanks jackie 🙂

  4. My earliest memories of tv are the children’s programs on Watch with Mother, which replaced Listen with Mother on the radio, called wireless back then.
Bill & Ben, the Flowerpot Men, the Woodentops, (who now run the company I work for), Rag, Tag and Bobtail and Andy Pandy, who annoyed me even as a kid.
Comedy: Steptoe & son, Tommy Cooper and ‘Til Death Us Do Part, then later, Monty Python.
Sci-Fi: Dr Who, with William Hartnell, and not least, the Daleks.
Variety: Sunday Night at the London Paladium, but with Bruce Forsyth.
Crime drama: Z cars, No Hiding Place and 77 Sunset Strip.
There were various Westerns too, like Bonanza, Rawhide, Laramie, and I was also a great fan of Cannonball, and Casey Jones.

    Good idea Jackie xx
