Time Zones and Chatting, or Blog

Time Zones and Chatting, or Blog

No one is in the Chat room, none of them. Why? And oh my and What to do? First, there is a handy time zone checker on the home page and it helps a lot.

I am in eastern USA and most seniors are not up. I certainly believe that to be true, and if they are up, they do not chat. The Brits are in the middle of the day and having tea or too busy. Most of the Aussies are sleeping and so are the people from New Zealand. So, what am I to do?

Obviously, I have to adapt to the schedule. I can just get busy at 5:00 am EST, and come in later. I just need to get into some different habits which may even work better for me. The world will not adapt to my schedule.

To confound matters, the southern hemisphere is on summer when we are on winter and that cannot be changed, but we did discuss having one time around the world, but that would not change day or night. No, it won’t. I just don’t think so. People are going to sleep when it is dark and wake when it is daylight for the most part.

So, on this chat site, just adapt. If you arrive, and all the folks are leaving, don’t get a complex; the Brits will go to bed at a proper time, or most will. We do have a few owls and they are precious to have because they hang with you when the rest leave. I think Americans stay up late and sleep late more, and hence I have no one in the chat room.

Well, I just have to change and I think I will like jumping up quickly and running around, but it will be dark and the grandson works nights and sleeps days. This adapting will take some work. Now, if you can’t chat, you may just write a blog.

  1. Rose yes it’s difficult time zones are something we have to cope with. Chatting to overseas friends for me means staying up until the early hours or getting up early to see some of the night owls. But I find it is worth it.

I do find blogs are a good way of communicating though as our different times do not really matter and in a way you make friends just as easily in how we comment.

We are hardly ever see each other in chat rooms but I count you as a friend through your blogs and my occasional efforts. Pat

  2. patak, It is so good to hear from you and your tone is always measured and considered and I value your opinion, because after I wrote the blog I realized that making some changes would be wise and worth the effort, just like TV or the movies, we make some changes. Thank you very much.

  3. Rose, this is always the dilemma for international chatters. I lived in your time zone all my life till moving to N Ireland. There is a 5 hour diff from EST to GMT so if you go say around 9AM EST it’s 2pm GMT. People in the UK here do chat around that time though usually later in the day.

Try coming in around 2pm your time which is 7pm GMT and it seems many are here at least by then.

I sometimes go in around 7am GMT and have met Americans who are up late then. My day is starting, theirs is ending. But we meet up. That the US has so many different time zones doesn’t help at all.

It used to annoy me even when I was in the US and had to call the west coast and accomodate the 3 hour difference.

  4. Forgot to add Rose, try going into a chat and just minimizing the room but keeping the entry sounds on so you can be doing other things online and when you hear someone come in, you can catch them.

  5. Thank you Gael and all your comments make a lot of sense. About 7 pm EST would work for me. I don’t do much else at that time.
I wrote the blog to clue others in, since I have figured out most of it as I went along.
So Gael, you moved from US to Ireland, that must be very interesting, and do you run over the continent a lot?

    1. Rose note I said 7pm GMT is 2pm EST. It is confusing!

“About 7 pm EST would work for me. I don’t do much else at that time.”

7pm EST is midnight GMT. And you may catch someone then in the UK. I’m never on that late so I can’t say with certainty.

And yes, it is interesting to put it mildly relocating from the US to Ireland! haaa! I was back to the US three years ago and will go next year probably, so I don’t go back and forth frequently in answer to your question.

        1. YW Rose, well at least now you have a couple of time options which may yield results.

With this being and international chat, it simply will never be possible to expect everyone to be able to meet up easily.

The truth is, chats, even those in the same time zones, are always subject to the issue of people coming in at the same time.

Events such as quizzes can be set up in advance for a certain time. But other then that, it will always be the luck of the draw.

          1. Gael, I, like many others, thought we would come to our computers when we had time and needed some amusement, but then we realize that what we want is not there; so we have to choose between taking what is available or changing our schedule. We have a choice to make.

          2. This is true, Rose. As we speak now i have a room minimized and am waiting to see who may arrive. I do other things online while waiting.

It’s a hit and miss thing with chats and you just have to be persistent.

  6. Bloom , now that we have daylight saving it puts us another hour forward, In Australia here in Victoria, so when it,s daytime here its night time both in America and England, as well as other Countries…. we find it extremely hard to converse with Chatters in our night times ,, most of our night time chat lobby is empty becasue all in the Northern Countries are sleeping , so we get a small window of conversation in the Mornings , which most are trying to get their housework and shopping done,or out working , so that leaves a very small window of afternoon conversation between 2 pm and 4 before the chatters all go off again, sometimes when its not day savings we get and extra hour or two during our early evening thats it ….. so all we have are the blogs and groups to keep up with the rest of the chatters … i try to take two hours each day , on most days.. which is your night time …. very difficult indeed….xxxxxx

    1. Lani. I understand, and also there is the different seasons, and we spend more time on the computer in winter than summer, but I do manage to catch the Aussies and when I do it is worth the time. So, I will just plan to spend a lazy day and catch up.
