This is my wish

This is my sincere wish
That each poet would know
What smells like old fish
What to keep and to throw

But each baby is pretty
Vest buttons to bust
No matter how sh____ty
So publish we must

We’re sure the world wants to hear
Every gush of emotion
Must it absolutely find ear
What gives us that notion?

So again my sincere wish
Pick and choose just the best
If they smell like old fish
Don’t publish the rest

  1. Hmmmmmmm….I,ve always believed beauty is in the eye of the beholder…

  2. Well as I said, each to his own. If you don’t like the author or verse, read on. Many others do.

  3. Trouble is Mac, there is someone at the end of a dig which is unwarranted because they have done nothing wrong.. We know who it is aimed at. It is nasty.

  4. Not everything one writes ought to be published. There are some excellent poets on SC and I know the difference. My piece was not nasty. it was an attempt to gently suggest to authors (yes one in particular) that quantity does not equal quality. I will be glad to point out the difference with examples if you want. I could pass it by yes. I did forbear it for a considerable period until I couldn’t take the saturation of the group any longer. Some moderation is in order to allow others to sing their songs. OB

    1. so oldbull even if in your opinion “you know” the difference between excellent poets and i presume, “inferior” poets why do you consider only people who write “excellent” blogs or poems should publish?

  5. And who may I ask, is the judge of quality apart from your self appointment????

    1. OK that is a fair question. I offer Laurence Perrine. (You may read his bonafides at the following link; http://smu.edu/registrar/Honorary_Degrees/bio.asp?pid=213&name=Lawrence%20Perrine) The following is from his standard textbook “Sound and Sense. An Introduction to Poetry. Fourth Edition. 1973. “And here, perhaps may be discussed the kinds of poems that most frequently “fool” poor readers (and occasionally a few good ones) and achieve sometimes a tremendous popularity without winning the respect of most good readers. These poems are found in great numbers…..and appear in anthologies entitled “Poems of Inspiration,” “Poems of Courage,” or “Heart Throbs.” The people who write such poems and the people who like them are often the best of people, but they are not poets or lovers of poetry in any genuine sense. They are lovers of conventional ideas or sentiments of feelings, which they like to be expressed with the adornment of rime and meter, and which, when so expressed, they respond to in predictable ways.” He goes on to name three inferior types of poetry, the sentimental, the rhetorical and the didactic. (pp 242-243) All three are repeatedly represented in the works I wrote my brief parody about.

    1. That is my wish also…Are we all supposed to believe and feel the same things here? Are we humans or robots? Do we all have minds and beliefs?
I thought we were sharing these things…..

  6. What a load of arrogant, pompous, self righteous, up your backside crud. Maybe you could start your own poetry group “OLD BULLS OLD BULL “. Leave the rest of the Hoi Polloi to enjoy postings without fear of attack.

  7. Well i am thinking that everyone has a right to their opion …..so i think oldbull has a right to his too, we may not agree with his ideas ,but i think we can put it in a nicer way than it has been said here today…and if I was any kind of a poet i would think that a lot of what was said could be right ….but i am not and have no right to critizise a poet . but I think wheather its right or wrong people can still be nice to each other… constructive critism is the way to go i think…mac

  8. our kind hearted mac think constructive criticism is the way to go and for old bull too love, it is not for him to decide what is acceptable or not, this is a friendship site, is ok for everyone to contribute and not live up to anyone elses standards, just lets enjoy everyones contribution. i am terrible at blogs however still attempt one now and again lol

  9. yes skip was aimed at oldbull as well i am not always kind hearted skip …but think we should be able to put critism in a way that its meant so people don’t take offence ..its the words of the poem we are debating not the person…..mac still love you skip

    1. Yes mac, what gordie and i were laughing at was the “expert” , so reminded us of some one we know, very intelligent, successful person business wise with not much idea that his ideas are not what most think if you get what I mean.

  10. Of course everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I disliked the underhand way it was done. I was referring my descriptive terms to the quote by this obscure “expert” Old Bull quoted. Just read what he wrote in the response Old Bull gave – ” inferior types of poetry” – and the classic quote “The people who write such poems and the people who like them are often the best of people, but they are not poets or lovers of poetry in any genuine sense. They are lovers of conventional ideas or sentiments of feelings, which they like to be expressed with the adornment of rime and meter, and which, when so expressed, they respond to in predictable ways.” . “Often the best of people?” ???? gee, thanks. What is that all about?
Some people spend time and enjoy writing poetry, be it witty, observant, poignant, topical or whatever. There are topics on here that I too don’t have a great deal of interest in but I give a little time to read or even glance over it. I give a “like” thumbs up symbol if I like it or give a short comment. It must be very disheartening to take the time and trouble to place something on here for it to be ignored, let alone criticised or worse still, done so in the way which is supposed to be clever.
Someone is at the end of that and someone who has done nothing wrong at that.
Where does it end.? Criticizing people who put their photos on the site because they are not David Bailey or gallery worthy.?

  11. Truth is I could have held my piece even with his saturation of the Poetry Group with reams of his “poetry.” It was only when he brought his opinions about U.S. presidential politics and personalities into his poetry that I was fed up. There is probably a Group of Forum somewhere in SC for politics including political satire. But passing your political views off as poetry, lousy poetry at that, makes one fair game for a dose of reality. Oh it was just fun? Not meant to be nasty, mean or offend anyone? Yeah right. Oh and when you don’t like the answer to your question indulge in a tirade; that’s constructive; and calling Perrine obscure because one doesn’t know of him is sadly laughable. This is my last post on the topic. So if you need the last word indulge yourselves. It won’t make the schlockmeister’s poetry any better.

  12. well oldbull might be your last say i have one more. i might be an old girl and forget things at times short term lol however i have a great long term memory i remember the day you joined and came into chat, you poo pooed us and i can remember saying to you something like, there are other sites if we don’t come up to your standards. So apparently nothing has changed. I know i felt insulted on that day and so did others. we did try to welcome you and i thought you had settled in until you made a remark about other groups when you started your own, i was insulted again for myself and other group admins as told you they take a lot of time and effort, i did withdraw my remark and you said thank you. So once again i thought you had settled in and your group went well and i appreciated what you were contributing to the site, that is the aim of the game, to make our lovely site even better. Now you attack darryl, someone that loves what he does, contributes to the site but is not up to your standard in your opinion, a person who has listened and posts his poems in the poetry group. that is not nice ob and i do not like it and i feel your attack is not only cruel and hurtful to darryl is is not good for the site. ok that is me nearly done. I wish you well ob and would really appreciate if you would just accept people here for who they are, not your expectations of them, we are a great sc family and would like you to be part of it.

  13. I gotta chime in here. Old Bull didn’t do anything wrong in my opinion. He wrote a poem and I might add a very well written one about something he felt strongly about. It was not a personal attack at all and I think folks have misconstrued Old Bull’s meaning here. He didn’t say anything about Darryl the man, only that his poetry left something to be desired.

I have nothing against Darryl as a person, but his entrance was indeed a bit rude. He comes across with this me Me ME brashness, it’s really a total turnoff. He has dominated the poetry site to the point where few post because their stuff is lost in the never ending flood of this attention seeker.

I’m with OldBull on this one. Something needed to be said, and OldBull was the only one with the guts to do it and he did it quite eloquently.

When did we as a race become so afraid to say what we feel? Do we just pander and coddle everyone these days for the sake of being nice? I don’t dislike Darryl or anyone for that matter. What I do dislike is the methods Darryl uses to draw attention to himself. That should be the end of it, but I know it won’t be. Others have expressed similar thoughts to me about Darryl’s methods, but don’t want to get involved.

Darryl has every right to express himself, but so does OldBull.

    1. BRAVO CHALK!!! Couldn’t agree more. I could not comment earlier, as my Irish temper needed days to calm down. There are going to be differences, there are going to be differences of opinion. That doesn’t mean one is right, the other wrong; one is better, the other worse. It means DIFFERENCE. I do not like the blog monopolized by any single person. IMHO, it is a big turnoff. That is my personal belief, which I believe I should be able to state accordingly. As should I be able to agree or disagree with what Chalk said, just so happens I completely agree. Everyone should be able to state their opinions. I do have a question…(I know I always have a question OB)…I thought politics was a taboo subject on SC. And taboo because it can cause offense just as it has in this case. Lastly, I would like to pose something to think about…one does not have to be a poet laureate himself, to be an expert on poetry. I know several people who cant write a 4 line poem worth a patoot; but through the combination of studying poetry coupled with their love for it, has resulted in a huge base of knowledge and certain level of poetry expertise. Just because you are a great poet, does not mean you are also great at the analysis of. My job for 25+ years has been related to Open/Public records law – i.e. the release of governmental records to the public. I am an expert on the law, how to apply it, what exceptions under privilege exist & when to apply them, and I can train and explain the law accordingly too. I have schooled everyone from the janitor to the CEO. I have logged 100’s of hours of research for supportive documentation on legal opinions provided by my municipality to the legislature. Could I write the law or improve it, I think not. However, I do believe I have expert knowledge of the law itself. Same is the case many times about things in life.

  14. Well Chalk..I am very surprised you think for one second that we have misconstrued OBs “poem”, sorry brief parody, especially as he has admitted himself it was aimed at one person in particular. I am not blind or stupid and I realised who it was aimed at immediately, as I am sure others did….As we are being blunt here, I will get my tuppence worth in I read the Activity page regularly every day and I get sick to death of reading reading reams and reams of a certain subject which is apparent if anybody goes onto that area…I say “read”, I don’t. It is not something that interests me in the slightest – word games – so I pass onto the next subject which may or may not interest me. I don’t write a nasty sarcastic piece. It is very easy. If you don’t like it, read on. As I said in my earlier post, who has the right to tell somebody that their postings are good or not? Do we tell others not to keep posting pictures because they are rubbish in someones opinion????? Where do we draw the line? If you want a good reason also as to why people (me) have got extremely wound up about this post, it is the underhand way it was dome – someone thinks they are clever, above everybody else and believes that by spouting long words most of us have to look up, they have the high ground . They don’t.. Read OBs reply “if one doesn’t know of Perrine, it is sadly laughable”. Really? I am neither. See what I mean. Well I don’t know Perrine from Perrier and frankly don’t give a monkeys either, but I am able to give people the respect that they deserve when they take the time and trouble to post. If someone don’t like an article read on and remember there are people that do.

    1. So your argument is that you should have just ignored OldBull’s poem and moved on because you didn’t like it? So why didn’t you?

OldBull did not attack Darryl the person, only gave his opinion that the poetry wasn’t up to snuff. He’s entitled to that opinion. But a slew of people did come in here and ganged up on OldBull the person for simply stating his opinion. So which is worse?

  15. You reminded me normijs of “Grumpy old men” great movie and in spite of the competition a lot of love in that one. I know on occasions I get out of sorts however would so miss the people who make up this senior chatters family if they were not here.

  16. Helensophie. I think the big difference is all that you have to know and do know,is based on fact. There is a rIght answer and a wrong answer law wise, not an OPINION scoffing at others work .. followed by a pompous attitude in a reply. I still think the answer is simple. If anybody doesn’t like/want to read a blog or posting, go to the next one.

  17. well here i am to wade in the mess..i read this poem cause it was refreshingly short …wasn’t aware it was aimed at anybody but seems some people do…it was only after reading..reading..and reading some more..that i was to learn it was aimed at darryl..who i believe has a huge ego..why else would he post and post and post his writings?..which by the way i only read one as the amount of them put me off to reading anymore..and can’t say i’m a big fan of bull mainly cause i don’t feel drawn to get to know him better…so you can’t say i’m taking sides..lol..and to think i almost passed this poem by..
