Surviving Winter and Life

It is cold here, 10 F and feels like 0 F.That is cold for Louisville Kentucky. We are southern. Most don’t own a real winter coat and don’t wear a coat if they do, but they hate winter. I spent most of my life in a much colder place and we took winter seriously. Winter is like like life, you just have to know what is ahead and make the most of it. I write F and you know what comes to mind.

You gotta “dress for it”, that is what they say about winter. I did dress for it and I learned to cover one eye at a time for the 7 minute walk home from work when the temps were in the minus numbers. I am small and I had trouble with the wind too. Like Life, you will get blown about. Once I was sitting in my high rise home and I thought I saw a head going upward but it was only someone’s wig, evidently got blown off. Sometimes you cannot believe your eyes. Between two high rises shoes have been blown off people’s feet. Strange things do happen and those high rises did strange things to wind. Boots don’t get blown off and they cover your leg up to where your coat should be. Coats need to be adequate and you need layers, Layers that you can peel off like an onion. Situations start getting threatening, start layering up and be ready for a quick exit. You cannot change the weather and you cannot chage the science of life but you can dress up and show up and then be prepared for most anything.

Like life there is a lot of people worse off than you and being DAMNED grateful helps a lot. The Eskimos survive and our fellow citizens survived, at least most of them, in Maine. I do not want to be funny but survival is NOT guaranteed. Do not risk more than is necessary. Worth thinking about and save for a rainy day and there WILL be rainy days. I was an optimist and I survived, and being an optimist and being foolish is vastly different. I think I was also foolish. If most of us admit it, we have been foolish about some things and still are.

I just took my garbage out without a lot of winter wear, and I now know that almost anything can be done for a few minutes. Some people are doing a new kind of therapy. They get into a freezing chamber. It is called Cryotherapy. I have heard about the Swedes doing the snow baths. Why? Don’t know. As for me I will avoid the extremes of all kinds. I will hunker down and bake something and cook something in a large pot and keep the lights burning and the heat on. It has worked thus far. I am ready to think about Cryotherapy but I will let others test that first. I will stick with the tried and true. Winter is fun so far.

I love the season here and like life each has its own beauty and challenges. I just hope to survive and enjoy them as much as possible.

  1. Hi Rose, well our forecast gives a very cold week here too, you just have to be sensible about the weather, people are advised not to venture out on the ice and snow if they don’t have to, but of course they do because they cannot live without a daily newspaper for a few days errr……..and so very often they slip and end up in hospital with broken limbs, not good for the elderly, can soon develop complications……….keep a good stock of food in and enjoy the warmth, bad weather doesn’t last forever, but my one grouse about dressing for the weather is this, we dress up as if we are going on a trek around the Antarctic, then we get in the Supermarkets and shops which are heated, and soon we are melting and irritated because of all the layers of clothing…….so what do we do, in my case get back outside as soon as possible because I am not going to start carrying coats, hats, gloves and all that paraphernalia around, well Winter gives us some very picturesque scenery, but roll on Spring, that’s what I say……

  2. Hi Rose,I so envy the colder weather you are experiencing and even though it must be necesary to rug up for that cold spare a thought for us poor buggers down here in the midst of summer. It got to 34C (96f) today even with a cool southerly blowing, tomorrow(your Tuesday) is going to be 41C(103f) and total fire bans with a mild (thankfully) northerly with a promise of a cool change later in the day with possible thunderstorms (hope they`re wet ones),all portends to an uncomfortable night gasping for breath.Thursday (your Wednesday) brings a promise of only 19c (68f),such a contrast and i`ll be out in bare feet, shorts and a single in that provided I can get out of bed after a sleepless night.Again spare a thought for us as a lot of us would love to be basking in the comfort of a mild 60-70f or even cooler.Even my weeds are withering in our heat which has been with us for the last 4 weeks. So,Rose while I dont ask you to like your colder climate,at least know its a whole lot more comfortable to dressup for cold than to dress down for the heat.Stay warm Rose and thanks for a Northern hemisphere appreciation of the weather.

    1. Starlette, I know what you mean. Too many women wear flimsy shoes and suffer falls. Men shovel snow and get heart attacks, but I think men are learning not to do that, because I don’t hear of it. We have carts at a lot of stores and we just throw the coats in. We have big stores and you probably have small ones. I used to make a joke, This is one of about the three perfect days we get a year. That is it. A few perfect days and the rest to be managed. I don’t like heat or cold. I just don’t do well in it at all. Like somebody said here, “You can bundle up for the cold, but if you are naked, it is still hot. They are suffering from the heat in Australia. I have a good climate and I am lucky.

  3. Hi Bloom , i would give anything for a few cool days , it’s all relevent to the seasons i guess,we have had weeks of 37 ,38, 40 AND 41 CELS HERE, so hot i can ‘t keep the bird bath full of water for the native birds to drink, poor little feathered friends….. my kitchen on the west wall is full on sun from1 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at night so my kitchen has been 42 aND 43 cel
So a litle of your cool weather would be a blessing right now … i believe we are going to have another 41 cels again tomorrow Wednesday… hope we get a cool change soon …..cant cook , cant sit ,cant bear it ……

    1. Oh Lani, it sounds awful. I am so sorry for you. How long will your heat last? Maybe just like our winter, another month for the worst of it. Do you have Ac or can you go to a public place that does have AC?
