Strange Bed Fellows
My first experience of life in New Guinea was as a very naive twenty year old. Who grew up in a small country town as a Catholic, so Priests and Nuns were respected people. What a surprise I got to see them in their old shorts in the mud, doing all the dirty work about the place, living in little houses just like the natives.
My house was like the natives made of palm leaves ,woven together to make the walls and roof. It was good it kept the rain out ,but not the other things that cohabited
with us. It was nothing to wake up in the middle of the night see things sitting on your bedside table, I donât mean your glass of water either.
I woke up one morning with this great big rat, just looking at me, I could see just what he had been thinking as I had been asleep.
ââI could have a nibble on your ear you know ,you wouldnât know till it hurt .â
ââJust you try it âI told the rat as I looked it straight in the eye.
It looked at me I looked at it.now I hear you ask get up run away donât just lay there looking at it.Well there was one problem I couldnât get up and run if my life depended on it,and this was only a very big rat that seemed to be fixated on me. I wondered how many times in my very short stay in this place ,he had sat like this and observed me, from his place on my bed side table. I could have put my hand out and picked it up, no not going to do that he kind of was staring me out .
I couldnât get out of bed as I had fallen down the mountain the day before and dislocated my knee cap. My knee was so sore and swollen I couldnât move it. I was here by myself so no use calling out. Nothing within reach I could throw at it and the look in its eyes told me it was not one bit scared of me,so i just kept looking at it and he kept looking at me.
ââYou are not getting the better of me Mr. Rat I thought ââas i continued to hold eye contact .not feeling one little bit as brave as I sounded.
ââAnd just what do you think you will do when I jump on your bed âI could just hear him saying to me. Well if he did I donât know what I would do, as I couldnât get out of his way.
The bed was up against the wall, so even if i wanted to I couldnât get out the other side.
I could see the rat knew this as it looked as if he was smiling at me.
âOk I cant have this four legged rat hold me hostage â I thought âtake control of the situation â.I can just hear the rat thinking âI will just jump over bite her on the nose and runâ.
âI will get my pillow very slowly and knock it off the table.âI thought .
Ok plan of action slowly I started to pull out my pillow, keeping eye contact with Mr.Rat
as I started to raise it and swing.Mr.Rat gave one mighty leap and landed on my bed I screamed as if the world was at an end ,jumping around as much as I could with my leg and the rat was running around on top of me.Father walked in said âwhat in the world is wrong with you now, picked up the rat by the tail and threw it out the window.Looked at me said
â I am here to help you up to the toiletâ.as if it was an every day occurrence ,me having a rat as my bed fellow and being taken to the toilet by a Priest.
