OOPS!!!!

Just when I think I have heard it all and the younger generation is much maligned and misunderstood, I read this. My apologies to the members saying ‘oh poor boy’ but I find this so very funny hahahaha. Having been on the receiving end of power failure due to criminal activity I think he got his just desserts lol. I took this from a local news site.

An 18-year-old is lucky to be alive after he was shocked by 11,000-volts after cutting into a live power line in an alleged attempt to steal copper wire worth about $10.
The man was seriously injured when thrown from a power pole after cutting into a 400-volt line before tripping a nearby 11,000-volt line in Northland’s Tinopai last Friday.

A Middlemore Hospital spokeswoman told NZ Newswire on Tuesday that the man remained in a stable condition.

Northpower manager of public relations Steve MacMillan told NZ Newswire it was the first time he had heard of someone allegedly trying to cut into a live wire.

He said a person would be lucky to be alive if they were shocked by 11,000-volts as it was similar to a 1000C fire ball engulfing them.

About three metres of steal copper wire would sell for between $5 and $10, he said.

Thieves normally try to steal the earth wires which run down the outside of power poles.

Last month Northpower had a spate of earth wire thefts which put the public at risk because removing the wires could cause power surges and electrical fires, Mr MacMillan said.

  1. No sympathy actually. We have had horrendous thefts of lead and other metals all over London and elsewhere. War Memorials being stripped of heroes names because some thieving little blighter’s cannot keep their filthy mitts off anything nailed down or not. So when two got zapped by a live train line during one of their raids, there was absolutely no sympathy. Let it be a lesson to others that if you think it is alright to desecrate graves or climb church roofs for a few quid of lead or whatever, don’t expect too many tears should you take a tumble from the spire…. Criminals……. I so like reading about” just deserts”.

  2. The follies of youth does not constitute a near death sentence. If it did no one would be alive. The law is the law and the perpetrator will face the judge. Public opinion on the crime is of little consequence. I don’t know anyone in our age group who didn’t do something stupid in their youth.

  3. Follies of youth????????,They are little thieving scumbags as far as I am concerned. Criminals who deface gravestones and steal metal from war memorials have no respect for the living nor the dead. They cause untold damage, disruption and misery. The fact that they have no respect for war heroes explains what type of pond life we are looking at here.
I don’t know about you, but the few stupid things I did in my youth, didn’t break the law or cause distress to people.

  4. I agree. People need to face the consequences of their malfeasance, painful as it may be. Civilization won’t survive long without lessons learned. Maybe I’m a cranky old bat but I believe in respecting others property.

  5. The punishment must fit the crime. It is the Law!!! 11,000 volts is the barbaric form of punishment limited to murderers and cop killers. Not a stupid child of 18 probably committing his first crime. I doubt very much he’ll be a repeat offender. I do not mean that those who break the Law should not face the consequences of their actions, but the first rule of Justice is Mercy. If we forget that, then and only then is civilization doomed. Civilization has been in existence since ancient Mesopotamia. Not once in the history of man has civilization fallen because a single person plugged into a power line. It falls because of governmental corruption, starvation, cataclysmic events, the weather, and most importantly war all of which take centuries to occur. I’ve said the things I have said not out of animosity but from the knowledge acquired after years of study. I have said what I said with no insult to others or the wish to offend. In other words, “The defense rests.”

  6. The punishment should certainly fit the crime as far as Courts are concerned. In my view, if their actions result in them getting killed there’s no room to discuss further crimes they may or may not commit. Lesson learned and hopefully a lesson to others who may be thinking of doing the same thing.
In my Police former life,I dealt with a kid who along with his friend decided to rob a wages company staffed at the time by women. They doused them all in petrol and held a lighter to them. However, the light went out and the women jumped and overcame one of the robbers. The other ran off, got in his car, lit a cigarette and up he went. Horrendous burns to his face. When I spoke to him years later, he joked he had got off lightly compared to his pal who had been walloped within an inch of his life by the angry women. That and a prison sentence of 15 years meant that he should have learned his lesson but he never did until he was shot dead by a rival gang member. Some never learn when it is time to turn it in.
