ONLINE SCAMS

I had recieved a letter from Delta airlines in my junk mail the other day, as I always check before deleting as sometimes important emails get sent there if they arent on my list of contact.
I had received a notice from Delta airlines informing me of a flight I had supposedly purchased and I KNEW I hadnt. I was concerned that my credit card had been compromised or that someone was using thier site to hack into peoples computers, so I took it upon myself to find a way to contact them, copied the original letter I had received and emailed it to them.
They were swift in their reply and this is what they had to say:

Dear Ms. ******r,

RE: Case Number 5905337

Thank you for contacting Delta Air Lines regarding the e-mail you
received. I truly regret any inconvenience you may have experienced.

We recognize how upsetting it can be to receiving fraudulent emails
purporting to be from Delta, which is why we work closely with our IT
department to identify the emails and warn our customers. These emails
claim that the recipient has purchased a Delta ticket, that a credit
card has been charged, and that an invoice or receipt is attached to the
email. If you have received one of these emails, do not open the
attachment as it may contain potentially dangerous viruses or other
malware that may harm your computer.

Be assured that Delta did not send these emails, and our customers’
credit cards have not been charged as a result of the emails. These
emails did not originate with Delta, nor do we believe that any personal
information that our customers provided to us was used to generate these
emails.

We appreciate your selection of Delta and will always welcome the
opportunity to be of service.

Sincerely,

Tina Parker

I am only posting this as I know some people are not wise to the ways that online scammers will attack, so I am using this as a warning to all of you,,,,DO NOT open any attachments to emails that you are unsure of,,,,contact the company directly!
I had the same kind of email from my phone company and one of my banks as well, one turned out not to be a scam, it was from my phone company, but the bank one was. The only reason I was aware it was a scam was because when I get an email from my bank, it has a green arrowed check by it and this one didnt.

So, please, remain dillegent and cautious and if you arent sure,,,,DONT OPEN IT! There are ways to report this abuse and unless we all watch and are aware, it will continue to happen!

  1. Very good post, Laura… So very important to warn everyone of this. Many of these e-mails look so authentic with the company logo, etc. copied. This serves as a reminder to everyone…Beware. …Thanks Laura!

    1. Kate, this one did indeed have all the pertinent information needed as far as flight number, date of departure etc.. It looked extremely authentic, but all kinds of alarms were going off in my head because I KNEW I wasnt flying anywhere.
So many people get sucked into these kinds of scams, but I have an amazing virus protection on my computer that senses things sometimes I DONT sense thank goodness and often wont allow me to open something until I tell it to if I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IT IS SAFE!!!
I just know a lot of people that even come in here arent aware of all the dangers out there!

    1. I have had two emails hacked msscooter so I know what you mean. I very often report anything in my junk mail as phishing scams or if its advertisements block them from any longer emailing me. It takes a bit of time for it to stop but eventually it does!

  2. very good this Laura and thank you for posting it. I also get loads of this kinda thing but i don’t open anything, but like you say…folks do get taken in by them. 🙂

  3. Great post Laura, thank you for warning everyone, I get them all the time and yesterday I got one just as you described, being the accountant of the family I know exactly what has been purchased and when. This one said thank you for your order and payment of $180, to view your receipt click on the following link. I thought pull the other one and deleted. Is a clever way to get you in when you know you haven’t made the purchase and there are no details in the email. Thanks dear friend xxxx

    1. I know I consistantly get them skip, and normally delete them but this one TRULY looked real in every sense, down to the flight number and everything.
I guess in the back of my mind I was so hoping that someone had decided to fly me somewhere cause they wanted to see me LOL but I dont know anyone in Oakland Calif!!!

  4. I don’t take chances when it comes to banking or credit cards. I just take the card in question, turn it over and dial the 1-800 number for inquiries.
This goes for emails received as well as phone calls to my home.
Be careful. Like a fella says at work, “the second mouse gets the cheese.”

    1. Thats one of the things that had me wandering as well david is it didnt have any part of the CCard number on it, it just said how paid,,,,CC. Must of been one of the things that triggered the alarm for me.
