On being Careful

This is a fun blog, I had a friend sat in my kitchen and she was amused to see me cut open a tube of tomato paste to get the last bit. I told her I always cut tubes especially those plastic tubes, I get an extra week of toothpaste this way LOL! My friend thinks me nuts until I reminded her I’ve seen her save 6 inches of string because it could be useful. Another friend I know will use and reuse a piece of aluminium foil for ever. I know someone with a huge cardboard box full of electric plugs he has cut of old broken things, might be useful one day?  Yes we should all re-cycle  and I do try to to do so, however there is that tension between recycling, hoarding, cluttering you have to draw a balance.  So do you have a pet  economy that is perfectly reasonable but might seem a tad odd to others?

I also have other perversions according to my younger friends! I iron things. I just can’t break myself of this. I like my shirts ironed, I like my linen ironed which makes me weird apparently . I even iron clothes made from linen, I was told that this is crazy, the point of linen is that is should look rumpled, well not for me.  I use a fountain pen for heaven’s sake !  I drink coffee from a mug  and tea from a china cup with a saucer LOL!  I polish my shoes, have a tablecloth when eating. I write thank you notes and answer RSVP invitations , most people do not these days. So do you have any odd retro behaviours?

  1. The coffee in a mug and the polished shoes are the same with me. I have managed to break myself of one bad habit and that’s buying ties. I haven’t had to wear one for years, but found myself thinking “That looks smart. Just a last one”. Finally after much trying I’ve managed to break the habit.

    1. Glad I’m not the only one polishing LOL! I always look at people’s shoes and…..I’m whispering here, I do tend to be a bit judgmental on them ! When I used to fly through UK some years back, I always looked for, The Tie Rack and bought ties for my husband. They were reasonable price and such imaginative designs, someone in their design department was great. Sadly they have lost that spark, last time I looked they were beyond dull and dreary. Like you my husband does not wear them now , no need to dress up in his case.

  2. Rockflower, I am making a quick reply and as per usual will keep making comments as I have more time. I almost never ironed. I don’t usually buy linen and I have a refresh cycle which works well for what I have. I do steam occassionally. Ironing is almost never done. My time also gets SAVED. Time is money and at our age in precious short supply.
Most all my clothes are wash and wear. I have pretty mugs for coffee and tea. I use them all the time. I use place mats mostly instead of table cloths or I use vinyl for the kitchen table.
Savings. First I shop wisely and carefully. I conserve on all disposable products, but I am not extreme. I like multipurpose products and shun advertised brands that are too expensive.
I will buy what I really love and won’t let a price stop me and that is why I save. I do buy paper products in huge quantities and save time and money. I have plenty of storage room.
My goal is to save not to deprive myself.

  3. Hello October…….I use to iron everything even socks, how sad was that..lol……not anymore, more sense learned………my bugbear with ironing is shirts, I like to wear them over strappy tops but hate ironing them, ladies ones of course…..I have a obsession for buying tops, I really need to curb this habit but there are so many pretty ones in the supermarkets today I just throw them in with the groceries………..I will seek rehab for my addiction……lol………..but I wont waste time on unnecessary chores anymore, time is to precious and I have better things to do…….
