New Years Traditions

I have about 15 minutes before midnight on New Years Eve and I have already decided on what to cook tomorrow. I like to celebrate and I like to cook, so any silly or real reason makes sense to me. In this part of the world certain foods are supposed to bring good luck. We ALL need Good Luck in the coming year, so here we cook legumes, pork, and green, and also cornbread because it is gold colored and we love our cornbread here. I just read that baked goods especially round cakes are traditional. I am making apple cobbler in a round pan so I think that will do and everybody knows apples and pork go together. I plan to have a fun day and smelling beans, pork, and apples will be a wonderful way to celebrate New Years Day.

I am about done, and I hope you are enjoying the day or evening and will try to add joy to every day for whatever reason. I would love to hear of your special traditions and I hope you are enjoying the chance to begin another year, and I hope you plan to enjoy it and have hope and optimism to carry you along. I have had some special spirits, and I may be more joyous and optimistic than you sober ones. I send love and good wishes to everyone

I am watching New York and waiting for the ball to drop so I need to go.
So what are you doing to celebrate?

  1. Happy New Year roseinbloom!
The only tradition that will never stop is hearing gunshots at midnight. I remember when my grandmother asked me once to keep an eye on grandpa outside, just in case. Because he was in his eighties and 120 pounds soaking wet, and the gun wasn’t the only thing that was loaded!
For the record, grandpa was a solid man. I miss him.

  2. Hello Rose, well its kind of tradition here to make New Years Resolutions, diet exercise etc, and usually to break them within a week…….it’s also believed that you will have better luck if someone with dark hair takes the first step into your house on New Years Day……..and to bring a lump of coal into the house too, but as there are not many coal fires left wouldn’t think this happens much anymore…..anyway all the best to you Rose, may you have health and happiness in 2016…..

    1. Star, we do the resolutions here. Usually, it is diet and exercise and losing the 10 pound they put on during the holidays. It is very interesting about the coal.Coal in the Christmas stocking is bad here, but coal on New Years is good luck. No one said traditions have to make any kind of sense. Many of our US customs come from England and Germany. Many people don’t know it, but many germans came to the US and that is where we got hot dogs and hamburgers.
