my early life

While working as a passenger guard in gillingham in Kent . I had a journey from Gillingham to Victoria station.we were half way in to the journey when the signal on our two miles from Bromley south went to red and stuck there .as the guard of the train I had to let the driver know I was going along the track to the signal to alert the signal box at Bromley south to in form them but as I did I had to lay out detonators that alerted other trains to stop as well I eventually got to the signal and told them it was another 30minutes till the engineers were able to sort out the problem the passengers were not amused I can tell you but this was out of our control we arrived 45 minutes late in Victoria station and it put our shift out a lot that day .

  1. Hello Frog

    Your blog set my old memory banks working – like when last at Victoria Station I had a credit card stolen-
    but I feel of more interest to you will be the fact that during my first couple of years in New Zealand(1971ish)
    I produced three railway recordings – can’t remember
    all the titles but two were “Farewell to Steam” and the “Kingston Flyer” we had some very happy days
    recording a passing train, then chasing ahead to the next recording spot.
    Thanks for nudging my old memory box;
    Kind regards Drummer
