Mathematics: Bane or Blessing

First. Thank you all who have expressed an interest in my blog. Before reading you, I felt quite alone with my fad but now I feel comforted. Thank you again.

I thought a project with a domestic slant that I am working on might be of interest: It will enable me to predict the cost of heating a house using the temperature predictions given on the TV.

Skipping the detail, it involves contrasting the temperature outside of the house with the temperature inside the house and comparing the difference with the change in meter reading when no other high consumption machines (e.g. washing machines etc) are in operation. This will enable the thermal resistance of my dwelling to be expressed as so many units of electricity per degree of difference in temperature per hour (Electricians will quickly see an analogy here). With this, I can evaluate the consumption for a hypothetical case using outside temperatures predicted by the meter and various inside night and day temperatures.

As related above, there would be quite a lot of paperwork required to interpret the results as described and that is where one of my other fads comes to the rescue. I am also working on a device in which a microprocessor does all the work.

Yes, there is a lot of preliminary work to be done, not least is to know what happens to the thermal resistance when it rains and the wind blows and how to handle that. They are the things that keep the cobwebs out of my mind and it is fun when the news is depressing.

 My kind regards to all
