Krill oil

Iv noticed recently, ads on TV espousing the benefits of Krill oil..(I capsual=6 caps of fish oil)..Now, that may or may not be,but whats disturbing me is,Krill is at the bottom of the food chain, many juvenile fish depend on it as well as baleen whales…If we fish out enough Krill, larger fish will start to disappear, because the food chain will have been short circuted.
We have already bought many species of fish to near extinction by over fishing..Taking Krill from the oceans can only accellerate this alarming trend.
If we want to take fish oil,for its health benefits (and yes,I,m one of them)..surely we dont have to mine the bottom of the food chain for it.
I dont know what us little people can do to stop Krill fishing..Boycotting the product would work if enough did it..but that wont happen.
Lobbying the Govt or politions would only work if they saw thier votes or power base being eroded.
What do SC members feel about this?
Am I being alarmist?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

  1. Being a descendent of the Whaling industry out of Sag Harbor Long Island circa 17th century. I totally agree with you. All life forms live a delicate balance. Take the krill, kill a humpback. People refuse to see the big picture. Krill did we need it a hundred years ago? Then we don’t need it now. Thank you for making this point.
