It’s never too late to learn.

dog painting

I thought I would start writing a blog about my experience of learning to paint in my senior years. It may inspire someone else to give it a try and discover the joy in discovering you can do something you never thought you could.

When lockdown started I wondered what I was going to do with my time.  Like everyone else, basically imprisoned in my own home, albeit in a lot better situation than a lot of other people, because I live in a very rural area and had access to my large garden and extensive views across a very picturesque Welsh valley.

A friend of mine suggested I take up painting.  I have never been an artist and thought I didn’t have an artistic bone in my body.  I started with watercolour, progressed to acrylics, then pastels.  I was amazed at  what I was able to achieve.

This is an example of a painting of a friend’s dog that I recently produced in pastels.

I’m not sure what else to write in this first blog but if anyone would like to comment and suggest what I should write in my next one please do so.

  1. that’s very impressive! I’m also doing some paintings now that more physical things are becoming more difficult and boring. Mine are mathematical paintings though, I post up the first one when I’ve framed it.

  2. I had never painted before; roseinbloom. I’ve just started using oils. Nothing like a challenge, I’m trying to paint a double portrait of my daughter-in-law and granddaughter.

  3. I used to paint in watercolour but have not taken up the brushes for a few years due to the hassle of clearing up and putting it away afterwards, shortage of time due to being a Carer for my wife who has Alzheimers. The drawing of the dog is very good, now keep going and hopefully you will find how relaxing it is.
