Guide Dog with a difference

Guide dogs for the blind are trained to be placid, calm creatures.

They are trained to be non-aggressive to both people and other animals.

A few years back I was walking thought the shopping precinct of a local town when I came across the exception to that rule.

Picture the scene. Little old lady with huge Golden Labrador guide dog. Busy shopping centre. Crowds and knots of people everywhere.

A nightmare for a guide dog to negotiate you would think? Not this one!

He led his mistress up to a knot of blokes talking football on the corner. They were blocking the entire footpath.

Undaunted this gallant hound suddenly goes from placid guide dog to war dog. The lips curled back, the teeth are showing and a deep growl from somewhere in his chest ripped out through the soccer conversation.

Like the parting of the Red Sea, this bunch got the hell out of the way of the dog, who led his mistress through and then went straight back to placid guide dog.

Sometimes situations demand more than you have been trained to do. Sometimes they require you to think on your feet. This wonderful animal had figured that out.

  1. I enjoyed this post Way – being an dog lover, I love reading about them. I think it’s absolutely amazing the tasks dogs can and willingly do for us all, especially the handicapped. They are truly man/woman/child’s best friend!

Thanks for posting this wonderful story.

  2. That was lovely to read, I come across quite a few guide dogs in my job and am amazed at the intelligence and loyaty they have, I always support dogs for the blind,

  3. Can well believe this, Way- I am owned by a small, gobby and bolshie shizh-tzu- bout 6 inches off he ground. Normally, he loves me to cuddle him, talk to him, spoil him something rotten. BUT- when out walking, if anyone dares to come near me, he immediately turns into a growling, snarling bundle of fur- that includes the postman!
I spend a lot ot time on my own, and I wouldn’t have him any other way!
