FOR THOSE THAT ARE SCOUTING THE GROUND AHEAD
Written by the members of the Scottish Folk/Rock Group Runrig
The best send off for an old soldier I have ever heard.
This day, especially, I miss you all
The old Boys
Are all leaving
Leaving one by one
Where young birds go flying
Spread your wings and run
But over the fields
By the drystone walls
An eagle will come no more
Welcome
Were the headlands
St Valery behind
No medals worth wasting
On memories of sand
But sweet is the breeze
Over Raasay
The morning awaits you there
What kind
Of heroes
Here for us now
Where leaders, stone preachers
Minnows on flow
But low hang the lights
Over Viewfield
And this night will day see no more
I have never heard of that folk/rock group Way.That song certaintly makes you wish/pray there was an end to war!…..one day? … not in our day…but one day!maybe, or will we obliterate ourselves first? yes, i think we will!..one day!.
I have never heard that Way but I pray we do see an end to all the wars……Thank you .
very good blog waylander. i hope we do see an end to all this fighting and the needless loss of so many young lives.
me to way hate all this fighting and wars… :o(
that was meant to be a sad face…..:-(
i hate it all way and wish it would end 🙁
The song is about the old soldiers passing on one by one. About real heroes rather than those made on “The X factor” or some such programme.
It laments the passing of those who know what war is, because they, and only they, have the knowledge and the right to say “Enough! This must stop!
Only when those who have been there stand up and say “No more” will there ever be a chance for an end.
