Favourite Meal

Situations can add a flavour to your feelings. Some time ago I saw a weird survey, or at some of the questions were. One I of them was asking about your favourite meal. I wasn’t sure what to put at first. It’s hot, so I like ice cream or it’s cold so a hot bowl of stew would go down nicely.

I was torn between my daily favourite which would be a Full English breakfast. I don’t have this very often because I don’t usually have all the ingredients. Normal sized tins of beans are a little on the large for 1 portion of veg. but that is what I would have if I was having beans on toast – or even Beans on Cheese on Toast. Smaller tins would give a more appropriate portion size but that size is more difficult to cook as they tend to just line the bottom of the saucepan. Tinned tomatoes give a similar but more difficult problem unless they are chopped. I prefer fresh tomatoes to be eaten uncooked. Sausage and Bacon would leave split packs in the fridge. As would Mushrooms and Eggs tend to be eaten not long after buying. Toast isn’t really a problem because I’m regularly buying Bread. But these supply problems mean that cooked breakfasts tend be eaten out.

The alternative choice was a Sunday Roast. When I lived at home we used to go to Nana’s most Sunday’s. My Dad had 11 Brothers and Sisters and a lot of them used to go also used to go when they were available. There was usually a different set of Aunts and Uncles each week. We were the family that kept up the tradition the longest. We had Sunday Roast on these days. Some days the house was very busy to celebrate a special occasion such as a Birthday, Christmas or Easter. Especially on these we tended to play a game of Chase the Ace. We all started with 3 lives, represented by 3 pennies. After a round of passing cards, the players with the lowest values (Ace was lowest) had to put a penny into the kitty. When a. Player had put in all their pennies, they were out of the game. If the last 2 players were knocked out in the same round, the money was left in the kitty and everybody started with a new set of 3 lives. We usually had 2 or 3 games and it possible a couple of times to go home with over a pounds worth of pennies in my pocket. After getting married, when we went out for a meal on Sunday, we tended to go out for a Carvery. These might be in the evening, but otherwise early afternoon when the grandchildren were going as well. That still qualifies as a Sunday Roast because they are a choice of roast meats plus vegetables.

However, my choice was a Pea soup. When I say Pea Soup, I mean hot water with a few peas floating in it. I said earlier that situations can change youths feelings. We were on a School Geography trip to Snowdonia and walking on Snowdon when the clouds fell down. We were following the Red lights marking a safe rout down the mountain whilst walking through this freezing cloud. So we were pleased to get back to the Youth Hostel. We had missed the designated meal times but it was deemed important that we got something hot inside us.
