Comments to blogs

I think getting responses from readers to our works is what keeps us motivated to putting in the time and effort of writing blogs which, as we all know, is hard work. When there are no comments, it’s like writing to a … vacuum. There is no feedback, no reaction, no words of encouragement. I would compare it to an actor on stage, performing his role heart and soul to a completely empty auditorium.

Writing is a lonely business because you do it all by yourself. Aware of this, I started up two Writer’s Support Groups, one here in Ottawa and one in Montreal when I lived there. They meet twice a month, have coffee together, then take turns reading out one chapter of their works in progress. Members then comment, making helpful suggestions of how it could be improved, or pointing out inconsistencies in the material which can happen so easily when you are totally wrapped up in what you’re writing. Being so intimately involved with your work, it’s painfully easy to overlook certain key factors that are wrong or missing in your writing.

Both groups I started 20 and 25 years ago, are flourishing and still going strong today all these many years later. Several of our members are now published authors.

  1. You’re right Jo. Comments to our writing really motivate us and Writer’s Groups, just like the one on SC, are a great place to learn and share. Thanks for all your great blogs.

    1. Thanks so much Tania, for your kind remarks. Writing is and always has been my passion. I still remember the first essay I wrote at the tender age of 4 in kindergarten. The subject I was to write about was cats.

Cows give milk, full stop. Do cats give milk, question mark. No for they are not cows are they?

Such scintillating logic! Mum kept this essay pinned to our fridge for years. Wish I still had it.

  2. I like it when the blog makes you think of something else. It’s like brainstorming, you never know what you’re going to think, remember or feel (state of mind). I notice that I sometimes comment a blog with another blog. Thanks for writing jojo, I always look forward to reading it.

    1. Thanks so much for your comment David. I entirely agree with you that it’s wonderful to read either a blog or a comment which brings to mind, a long forgotten memory, or makes on think.

I’m delighted to hear you enjoy my blogs. That’s what motivates me to write.

    1. Thanks so much Macathy – it’s wonderful when someone like you realizes that a lot of time, effort and thought went into writing a blog and that it doesn’t just magically happen.

  5. I have just started to read and comment on some blogs. Reading someone’s blog is a great way to get to know the blogger. I used to write poetry and journal frequently but lost interest somewhere along the way. Reading all of these blogs has awakened the desire in me to get back to it. Thanks to all for sharing at times a very intimate part of yourselves. I have a lot of catching up to do and comments to contribute. Maybe I’ll find the courage to blog on on the main blog page. We shall see !
