Collecting (or more of Morvy’s useless drivel)

I haven’t been well recently….all sorted now….but….it has led to me pondering….never a good sign….anyway…

I have never understood why people collect things….have collections…it could be anything from frogs (in any form) to WW2 tanks. To me it’s a mystery….ornaments are dust collectors and tanks????
I have often wondered what happens to these things when the owner quits this earth….well I expect they get chucked away….or sold (I can almost see relatives rubbing their hands together…in the hopes that they have found ”treasure”.

When we moved……downsized…took to a simpler life…..we threw so much stuff away…..or gave it to charity shops…all stuff that we had kept in case ”it came in useful”….not for me loftfulls of junk in this house and I have stuck to that…

Some people devote money…time….space….even to the extent have having extensions built…..to house these ”collections”…where do they end up?…..such a mystery.

Some people even keep books….not me… I buy them from charity shops….read ’em and chuck them back in again….sort of recycling.

All these things have been running through my head…and….as I felt better I thought I would find something to do.

I have a room….in theory it’s a guest room…..with a wardrobe…and drawers under the bed for storeage….so useful aren’t they?.

As I was deliberating what to do….I am a crafter…haha I had a reality check. Why was the wardrobe rammed with……cross stitch kits, tapestries….waiting to be started….I have one in progress….threads… sequins…. beads….card …..craft books….ribbon in every shade known to man…needles pins…at least 45 pairs of knitting needles…crochet hooks…parchment ….clothes bought from charity shops ”for the material”……(one day I am going to start quilting)….LOL….cutting boards….you name it…it’s there!!!! Old birthday cards…..so useful to make notelets ( I love writing letters) at least 5 fountain pens….the list is endless……and…..why on earth are the two ”linen storage” drawers rammed to over flowing with yarn….wool…patterns…some knitted premmie clothes waiting to go the hospital….hats and gloves knitted for Romanian orphans..all waiting for despatch!!!!! hahahaha….omg….I realised ………yes!!!….I am a collector.

I can’t visit a village…town…or city….without scoping out the charity shops and craft shops. It’s as if a giant magnet pulls me into these places….despite the fact that I don’t need anything really…I am wandering around….minding my own business when……zap!……I see a shop window full of ”my stuff”…and I am powerless to resist the force!!!What a plod!! hehe…and I completely forget that I have enough ”stuff” to last me twenty years.LOL…..except ..of course knitting yarn….you can never have enough can you? especially as I have three beautiful little granddaughters to knit for…..plus various babies that get born to friends…..and it’s such a joy…..to give them something that I have made.

As I enter these craft shops….or even stationers…..a warm glow encompasses me…..I am transfixed….I justify what I have bought…(.I always get something even if I don’t need it haha..)…by telling myself that….in being creative I am leaving a legacy of hand crafted items…..to be treasured by future generations…or even that I am supplying a need….which in some cases is true……oh and I enjoy it!!!

Yes…..I confess……I too am a collector….an addict…guilty as charged!!!

This is what makes us all so interesting….unique…different facets of humanity….valuable….so..fellow collectors carry on! (Take no notice of me whatsoever if you enjoy washing porcelain…or polishing silver)……enjoy!!
Well….have to go now….off to town…..I wonder if we will wander anywhere near that shop that sells…..oh stoppit M!!!

So….if you are passing a skip anywhere near here in twenty years time and you spot a half finished tapestry….or a bag of material pieces…..they are probably mine….I cant imagine that they will end up on the Antiques Roadshow….can you? hehe

Much Love Morvenna xxxxxx

  3. Enjoyed your blog Morv….I am not much of a collector myself…I buy most of my books at a used book store and take them back and swap them in for new ones, well new ones to me,….we downsized to a smaller house 12 years ago and i love it…it keeps me from collecting things lol…..

  4. I hate to confess… but I am a borderline hoarder. Ha! I have a huge closet in the guest bedroom that I’m trying very hard to de clutter. You name it… it’s in that closet. I have Christmas wrap to last another 30 years… if I live that long. If not… someone is going to be stuck with lots of Christmas decorations and wrapping. lol

These past years I have given away lots of things; I am determined to clean out that closet. I send a lot of clothes that don’t fit and are in excellent condition to one of my sisters; jewelry, as well. I love costume jewelry! I have been good lately though… I don’t buy like I use to.

Kitchen stuff… well, that would take a day to tell you about the stuff I have. LOL

  5. Maize, you sound like my husband in regards to collecting books. That man has more books than he’ll ever read… in my opinion. He orders them from The Folio Society; he has a tremendous passion for reading.

If he can order these fancy, expensive and leather bound books from The Folio Society… I can continue to buy kitchen gadgets!!! 🙂

  6. Course you can Pam! I have a study with floor to ceiling book shelves n full of CDs and DVDs…I will part with very few of them, once in a blue moon.I can’t help it…..I love them all! My treasures!
