Bus riding

I travel a lot by bus. My car is bust and so am I !
Couple of days ago I had to get into the city real early. It was a wonderous late summer morning, not a cloud in the sky. The sort of morning when your spirit soars.
The bus was full. Half way across a long river bridge, with a view over sparkling water and bobbing boats a foreign gent (only description that comes to hand) burst into song. He had a great voice. I was entertained and the the view over the river took on a new light – the water sparkled better – and the boats bobbed higher.
I looked around me on the bus. My fellow travellers were busy studying their shoes in deep embarrassment. At the end of the recital I applauded – only to be scowled at by my nearest fellow passengers. I was the only one that had applauded.
I got off the bus thinking – poor man, he will go to work wondering if he should ever sing again, and will start a negative day.
I got off the bus thinking – Where has collective warmth gone? It really is little wonder that radicalism rears its ugly head when we ostracize our brothers in that way.
Just a thought.

  1. Well all I can sat Dave is what a lot of miserable sods the other passengers were…..If I would have been there I would have applauded along side of you, and we could have given an impromtu pantomime performance too……..that may have put a smile on their face…..puts one on mine…xxx

  2. Great story! It’s both happy and sad. I love your descriptive writing, I felt that I could almost see the water, boats, people on the bus.
Like you, I want to make the most of every day, and the people /experiences we encounter! Make someone feel welcome, wouldn’t we want to be treated the same? Others can waste time feeling awkward and looking at their shoes anytime. Your story is a good reminder to not be like those “others”. Thank you.

  3. Collective Nutters of the world UNITE …. Indeed, we should NOT ‘look at our shoes’ …. but look into the eyes and slap the face of Society striving constantly to break any chains that prevent ‘Freedom’ of ANY sort … xxx Bloody WD, BCD!!! xxx

  4. Dave, I am sorry that you and your car are “bust”. I and most love to ride around in our cars, but you managed to enjoy your trip and learn something along the way. I took buses for years and then began a love affair with my car and have not been back on the bus since. I don’t remember anyone bursting into song. I did ride the trolleys in London and enjoyed that very much. I even made a good lady friend.

  5. Dave, also, thank you for blog and your thoughts about really seeing what is there for all of us. You have an ability to capture a moment and a a scene. I hope to hear more of your thoughts expressed here.

  6. Dave that man is my sort of person ,likes to be different and I love you for responding to his voice in the way you did. The other passengers are sad and don’t enjoy their lives like you and that man do
