Canisters of bull semen caused panic at a US highway entrance after they fell off a bus and spilled across the road.

Nashville authorities frantically tried to determine what the foul-smelling vapour coming from the containers was, after the sperm specimens fell off a Greyhound bus travelling from Columbus, Ohio to Loreto, Texas, about 5am yesterday.

A motorist saw the canisters tumble as the vehicle, which was on its way to a breeding facility, turned a corner onto the highway entrance ramp and called the police, WKRN-TV Nashville reported.

Police contacted the fire department after noticing the foul odour, but firefighters were also baffled by the unidentifiable containers.

They closed the highway entrance and contacted the Hazardous Materials unit (HAZMAT).

The HAZMAT team was unable to identify the contents of the canisters, but the mystery was solved after a firefighter noticed a ticket for a Greyhound bus near where the semen samples were dropped.

Authorities contacted the bus company and were informed the canisters were carrying frozen bull semen and liquid nitrogen.

A Greyhound spokesperson reportedly said it was not uncommon for a bus to carry bull sperm to breeders.

A canister of bull semen samples can reportedly be worth up to $25,000, and the cargo that fell off the bus could have been worth up to $100,000.

The bus company collected the canisters and the road was cleared.
