BLOG PRIVACY CONCERNS

Yesterday, Debz posted a blog expressing concerns about the privacy of our site and that others on the net would be able to access them. As promised, I wrote Rob about it, and here’s his reply:

…However, such is the way of the Internet and search engines like Google in
particular, who dynamically crawl the Internet and record new content when
it is posted, you will have to assume that anything posted on your Blog has
the potential of being indexed by a search engine. That said, although some
content may be visible from a search engine, only users who actually
register with the website can interact with the Senior Chatters community,
for example, reply to your Blog, etc.

In short then, and just like any other site, you should assume that anything
posted to your Blog has the potential to appear in search engines. That
said, the chances of somebody typing a keyword phrase into Google that
contains some of the text in your Blog post, and then for that Blog post to
appear in the top 10 (first page of Google) where competition is generally
very fierce is unlikely.

**************************************************************************************************

I think what Rob said is both factual and realistic – the chances of any of our blogs containing a key word and for that to crop up on the top 10 pages of Google are extremely unlikely. I believe the reason Debz’s blog did was because her article was about a specific man she’d researched, and obviously someone was also researching this bloke – but that having been said, we should all bear in mind that unlikely though it is, it can happen.

  1. There is a way that you can block whatever comes on on google.

I have done it before. Google anything that you use on the internet, be it your email address or screen name and all that has been entered into the search engine will appear.

You then have the option of hiding these entries, and once you have done that, your name will not be on the search engine options.

  2. Thanks for that!!

oh and just to clarify…….ha ha I am not seaching or scouring for men on the net!!! lol….hmmm……darn if I could just remember the name of the man I met lol!!!

On a serious note we all need to be carefull about our privacy………now is my name real or not??? ;0)………….

    1. Sorry about that misunderstanding Debz – you wrote about some famous gink, and obviously so did some other gink, ergo your blog popped up on Google!

Anyhow, another way to protect your blogs is to put C2011 (the year) then your name. I put “JoJo” not my full real name, but that’s good enough. This is copyright protection, because the date proves when you wrote it and if anyone tries to plagiarize your work, you have proof of having written it before.

    1. No, the site is secure Way. Your password for example is totally encrypted and nobody has access to it accept you. So as you put it, the site doesn’t leak. It’s a social site with the emphasis on building friendships and sharing.

It’s also worth mentioning that only members of the site can comment on Blogs and reply and interact with the community.

  3. I was joking jojo about searching for men….no worries ~

~ and ouch a gink!! I had to google that!! ~ gink?? ~ Gink is a slang term for a boy or a man that might seem odd or foolish ~ jojo that man was a Count…I think if you ask passaggio, fy2 or bettyk they will tell you he was nothing but a gink!!!
~ and it was me who googled the name and it came up with me so I guess that means I’m a gink as well!!!

Nowadays so many can copy and paste, also I started to write a blog well actually a book really!! in a blog and I had someone say they were going to use it to post to another site, hence I deleted and formed my own private group for those who were following, and NOTHING in has been on www as I did google writings which I’d put in there…

*****think so way…….I belong to other sites and nothing comes up, so I’m not sure how they do that as opposed to this site, just need to be very very carefull!!!

on that note … be safe

  4. I have found one way to protect my privacy online and that is by only posting what I wouldn’t be bothered seeing on the front page of the newspaper. So if people want to prowl around to see what I am saying, then they will either die of boredom or maybe they will learn something valuable. 🙂
