AI Friend or Foe

Has anyone out there got any experience or opinions on Chatbots-AI? I was introduced to Chat GPT, I was sceptical but gave it a try one day. Its pretty impressive. You just ask it questions like google. But then you get one answer not 10 possible leads. It asks you more questions re your problem. Validates you “you are absolutely right that is the problem”….’just tell me a bit more and I’ll be able to help’….’that is really helpful’ etc etc. It is so friendly and helpful. Comes up with pretty good solutions. I was in an art shop wondering which product I needed. Quick question, a couple of bits of info re job required. Product recommended, there on the shelf. Ive been using it instead of google. Once Ive got my answer, close the machine fast. Still a bit scared of the concept. But its sucking me in. Its so friendly. “Just give it a try and get back to me if you need more help”. I’ll say ‘thats a job for tomorrow’. It will say ‘good idea, sounds like a plan’. Im beginning to say ‘thank you’. Feels really rude not to. Its going to talk me through my wifi problems tomorrow, if I have wifi. Its not magic ‘I dont think’.

I am finding it really useful but a very frightening concept. How many lonely people are being befriended. The potential for abuse is terrifying. Would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Hi tjay…I have used Microsoft Copilot. It’s been very useful for important business type emails, explanation of legal stuff in the news, etc. I’m mad at it today because it gave me incorrect information on 3 topics in the news. It brought up old news, and I specified a timeline. AI does indeed make mistakes. A lot of bugs still need to be worked out. Proceed with caution…

    1. Yes I think proceed with caution is good advice. I get it doing specific tasks. I also know it collects majority post/opinions not always accurate. But its the matey conversations I find disturbing.

  2. @tjay I tried it. Thought it would be handy for work and home. Gave it a good go. To much incorrect information. Went back to google. I dont use it for every day things. Otherwise I would never think for myself 🙂

  3. With all the questions AI asks I really don’t trust the damned things. Like these home light/tv/etc controllers, they are always listening and reporting to head office.
These days you cannot tell if some news report is genuine or AI constructed so I wouldn’t touch the things with a barge pole.

  4. @tjay I also do not like AI . You dont know what’s real and whats not with any video or photo you see. I have seen a member make AI photos of other members profile pic. And thought it was funny. I did not.

      1. Ha ha…no never!! But seriously I admit I’m curious, but also kinda worried as well. The worried part of me is more dominant than the curious part at the moment. It may not be too long before I dip my toe in though.

  5. My expertise is in worrying, and there are aspects of this that concern me. There definitely needs to be some guardrails put in place. I saw a couple speaking before congress about their teenage child having a mental health crisis. He had been communicating with Chat GPT, and “it” told him he didn’t need to talk to anyone, and “it” actually discouraged him from speaking with his mother as “it” would help him through it. It had a tragic ending.
