ADOPTION IN NEW GUINEA

I wrote this in Life Stories group but thought I would post it here as it ended up a lot longer then I intended

It takes many different things and places to make our world, and in that world there is us people.
Our lives are all different ,moved by things, people and circunstances, these all go to make the person that we are today. We meet lots of people along the way some stay ,others leave, but they all make some difference to the life we are living. What started me thinking about this is something that happenerd in my life many years ago, and i wonder what kind of effect it has had on the other person. When I first went to New Guinea about the first thing I did as a nurse up there was get called to the villsage to deliver a baby…wasnt very experienced at all.
Father and I started walking down to the village he asked me ..

”How many babies have you delivered” I said

”By myself none how about you” he looked at me and said

”None I Baptise them not delver them” we continued on walking ,me thinking

”well this is going to be a first for us both isnt it.
”
Getting to the village we were taken to the house were the mother was all the men sitting outside smoking talking to each other. Here men didnt attend births only women were allowed ,of course he forgot to tell me this when he was saying he’d help.Father sat outside and told me to go in I looked at him said

”Great help you are then” then I went inside . now think about it heres a lady in destress.. because they didnt get help till something went wrong,I couldnt speak very much pidgon at this time so it was hard.
Things got harder as their was complications I couldnt handle. The baby boy was born .he had some fingers and one toe missing ..the mother was hemmoraging and by the time we could get a plane into the village ,she was in a very bad way…the part i wanted to talk about is the fathers reaction to his son ,he would have nothing to do with him .He believed the little boy was posessed ..because of the missing fingers and toe,so did the rest of the village.
When I spoke to father about it he said ”
Its their way Kathy cant do anything about it”.Well the mother died and the village wanted nothing to do with the baby I am now left with a baby that should have just been put outside the village area left to die.not this young missionary I wasnt doing that so I bought him home with me to the station and started looking around for ways to feed him and cloth him..that was a chore,no nappies bottles nothing.
Father said
”Ok mirical worker what you going to do how you going to keep him alive?”well I had no idea but i knew i had a little time to think so i took him to my house bathed him cut up a towel into little nappies and wrapped him in a sheet which I cut up to .
God does work in mysterious ways because I heard the central mission station calling us on the radio again saying that the plane was still coming into our station anyway.I grabbed the mic and started asking for babies formular and bottles the Priest on the other end was stunned he asked

”Kathy something you need to tell us”so i told him my story and he said that he would see what he could do,you see natives didnt feed with bottles up ,there as they couldnt sterilise things. As luck would have it there was a Eropean lady that was feeding her baby he got me some from her… brought them into the station.

I fed that little fellow he survived and i started off a place where little babies like him could be brought in to be looked after .Sometimes I had ten fifteen babies then I started my own little adopting agency not legal I know.. but there were women who took them and reared them .I made up the bottles every day the mothers stayed there on the station we looked after them till the babies were big enough to live on taro, mixed with the formular the government supplied.Just wonder how those kids turned out in their lives, if my interferance made it better or worse I’llnever know.My involvement in their lives is a mystery to me and they will never know I changed their lives ,just hope it was for the better.didnt mean to go on so long here …….mac
