Great Misquotes
So as usual its was the words of another chatter who rattled my memories. This was all I saw on a notification. It has to be sucking eggs. One of us Grandmas being interrupted whilst sucking eggs. What a great quote. I couldnt wait to read. Totally wrong, another great story about sucking up flood water with a vacuum. Thanks for the memory jogger, fellow chatter.
So many years ago, my husband and I were in our early twenties. It was the late 70s and we dreamed of sailing off on a yacht to the Greek Islands. We read every book of others who had sailed off. One being Rescued by Canberra, the Jones sailed off on their little yacht Dorothy Ann. It ended badly. They sank and were rescued by the cruise ship Canberra. They said ‘they found it hard to settle in life after that because they had been through the Magic Window’.
Ray and I did buy our first little boat and sailed off across the English Channel in our little 24’ plywood catamaran. With way more confidence than skill. We went through the French canals. Paid our way by grape picking. Came out into the Mediterranean and lived our dream for a little while. Then we too came to grief. Anchored too close to the coast. The wind changed in the night and we were on the rocks before we could save her. We jumped onto the rocks and were safe, but she broke to pieces very quickly. Our dream was spread out on Antibes beach on the next high tide. Then she washed away. That was Canbidun. And we did do it however briefly. Just 2 years.
We then swallowed the anchor. Sailors speak for deciding to live on dry land. We had our children and although we had Canbidun 2 and 3 and a couple of other sail boats. It was weekends and holidays only for 30 years. But we always told the kids how hard it was to settle having been through that Magic Window. Getting up when you want, travelling whenever and wherever we wanted. Living amid the elements.
So we finally decided, 3 years ago, to sail off again; before it was too late. Canbidun 4 had a nasty ring to it. So we needed a new name. It had to be the Magic Window. Seemed perfect. We decided to re read that book. And guess what we had been misquoting for over 30 years. It was a magic door in the book. So hey ho, our very own Magic Window. The best misquote ever. And so far all is going very well.
Any good misquotes to top mine?
What a beautiful boat and what exciting adventures.
Thank you. She is a lovely home and window to a different life.
Books are written about such adventures!! Thanks for sharing!
@LoriAnn absolutely. Or vlogs, are the current craze. Many travellers are being followed. Too much, tech and hard work for me. Im enjoying a simple life and doing as little as possible.
I love your boat. It is beautiful. And I enjoyed reading about your adventures and how you named the boat. A very interesting blog.
Thankyou @londoner
Enjoyed your story, lovely. So you have been sailing the seas with your new “magic window” for the last 3 years, must have a lot of stories to part with?
@Andreas yes its been fun. Our sailing background has been largely Uk so quite used to rough weather in our foul weather gear. One of our best moments was in Spain the first summer. Very very hot nights. Sleeping in very little when the wind blew up and our anchor chain snapped. We felt the movement and were out on deck in time. But then battled the hot wild wind in our underwear for several hours. Very surreal, fortunately for the natives it was dark.
