Kids say the darndest things.

After reading Tanya’s post about how to get to heaven I remembered my Mother in Law’s funeral where we took our VERY young mischievous son. Mum had been crippled for many years from arthritis in both knees. Thinking that the furthest away from the proceedings we could keep him the better I stayed waaaay at the back whilst my wife went to stand next to her father for support. Obviously by not tying the rotten kid up he got away from me and run down to the graveside where I was privy to a look from his mother that said if the hole wasn’t occupied I would have been placed therein. Anyway, Dad was ok with Andrew holding his hand and Andrew was happy to be in the center of things I was happy to be out of the line of sight from his mother. Then Andrew looked up and said to dad, “It’s ok, Grandad, Grandma isn’t in that hole, you know, she is in Heaven.” Phew, we got off light, but then, “Grandad? How did grandma climb out of that bloody deep hole with her bad knees?” I walked back to the car, it was going to be a long drive home.

  1. You gotta admit, it was a sensible question!! lol……kids can get you into all sorts of trouble!!!! and pretending they don’t belong to you doesn’t help much either!!! they tend to hang around you when they are their most “direct”…lol thanks for posting…xxx

  2. That’s a great story! I think young kids are so precious and so often hilarious. His comment was inappropriate for the moment, yes…..but very appropriate for a child of his age! A moment of light-hearted honesty at a difficult time for the family.

  3. Grizz its not just kids. I can recall as a young female, representing my new hubby at his step fathers” mothers cremation. I did not know anyone but my step father in law. I have a curious, practical mind and had no idea about the whole cremation process. After the coffin had slid respectfully behind the curtain we all went went back to our respective cars. In my mind I was trying to understand the process and was imagining a conveyor belt taking the coffin to the furness and as the next set of people were heading into the building for their turn, I suddenly found myself wondering if they burned the bodies collectively or separately…..imagine my horror when I realised in my nervousness I had actually voiced this as a question out load to the mourners in my car. I wanted to die.

  4. Well, obviously the angels carried her. lol Good story.. kids really do ask some of the most difficult questions. Now I would just google some of the answers that I didn’t know, but back then my standard answer was, “well b/c God made it that way”.. 🙂
