Games When We Were Young.
I was just wondering what games you all played when you were younger? I mean there was no internet or mobile phones.
We played hide and seek, tag, marbles, jacks, hop scotch, skipping, rounders , and various other outdoor games.
The skipping often involved my father and a neighbour twining a clothes line , so all the street could join in.
He also made us hoola hoops when that craze was in , and stilts another craze we had.
Roller skates, and making a jordey out of old prams so we could go fast down the hills in it.
We also had tabbogans for winter , then wrapped up warm , we would come down Hoad Hill on them.
In summer we collected Rose hips as shops bought them for 3d per pound, blackberries for our mothers, also mushroom picking.
I also remember potato picking for the farmers , (that was back breaking work)
There are so many things that I think the young of today miss out on.
We were never indoors unless it was bad weather.
Our mischief was tapping on windows with a button tied on the end of a bit of string…then running before the house owners caught us.
All good fun, and nothing was done to harm anyone.
I would rather play as we did, than sit on a computer , or phone someone all day long.
Thank you,
Tania

I well remember those games, Tania. I also remember being free to leave the house at 0800 and not return until 1700 and no-one being worried because there was always a pack of us and we’d be perfectly safe, unlike today.
I understand that, Waylander, we were the same, the only thing is we played mostly on our street, usually there is someone around on there…well there is here.
Hi Tania, most of those games were played, we used to stand under the lampposts and mess around, chatting, acting daft……but never vandalising property…..my friends and I created a secret code language….suppose a little like the deaf signing…different digits would represent a letter…..also favourite was gong into the fields and lanes and creating deigns from flower petals……the girls that is…..that was a time when girls were girls and boys were men……or Davy Crockett…..
Hi Star, I think we were safe in the lanes around us as most farmers were known to our parents. We never vandalised, I cannot see the sense in that….Thank you for your reply ..
Played a lot of games same as you Tania. I lived on a slight hill , and all the neighbourhood kids made go carts out of anything we could find as long as it had wheels, and we would have races down the hill. Have a few scars to prove it haha
It was all good though , Grandmaj…..Thank you
Well done Tania – you really have stirred so many memories – I didn’t care too much as long as a ball or cart of some sort was involved.
During the war, you could earn a shilling for every rat’s tail handed in at the local labour exchange!
Thank you, Drummer, we played Ball as well..and remeber conkers….health and safety have stopped that ….we enjoyed our games.
