Another week begins.  We begin weeks now on Monday, the first day of our contracted-out work, rather than on Sunday, the day of reflection, of the spirit.  This is fitting, for a culture that has become overwhelmingly and officially materialist. Rest for two days, have a little fun, then re-enter the machine as a work widget.

But our rulers let the cat out of the bag in 2020, when they practically ordered everyone who was an office worker to stay away from his office and to work from home.  “What?” thought the office widgets. “We can stop the dressing up, the rush, and all the the waste of time and money involved in commuting back and forth and simply plug ourselves into the little computer at home?  Freedom!”  The rulers, who had thought so very little about downstream consequences in their rush to eliminate a virus (an impossibility, had they thought it through) were taken aback.  “No, we didn’t mean that.  Now go back to your cubicles in your big glass buildings.  We need the tax money.”  Too late.  The work slaves had had the veils lifted from their eyes and had seen the promised land.
