ODE TO WHAT MIGHT’VE BEEN

This is a free verse poem I wrote some time ago, and decided to post on here today.

ODE TO WHAT MIGHT’VE BEEN

C 2009 Jojo

When I first met you, you took my breath away,

I thought you were the lover, I’ve yearned for all my life,

A man who’d accept me, exactly as I am,

Not wanting to change a single thing about me.

Who’d bring to the table his own unique gifts

Of acceptance, love, and aching passion freely given,

Even if only for the moment, that precious instant

When we’d be together, united as one,

In hearts, bodies, minds and spirits

Fused in that one brief moment, to taste the total bliss

Of burning passion, hot caresses, a tender kiss.

Both aware of its transience, and treasuring it even more

Because it would soon be over, and you’d leave

To go back to your real life, leaving me in mine.

But in those brief moments of togetherness,

We’d taste and know fulfillment of our most secret fantasies

And experience paradise.

But alas, like so much in life turns out to be

A mere illusion of what might’ve been, that has no basis in reality.
