Love affair with Chromebook and flirting with other Devices

I chose this title because I really am seriously INFATUATED with my CHROMEBOOK. I SLEEP with it at times, wake up with it a lot. Share it with NO ONE and have NOT TOUCHED another computer since I got this one. It has been my best and only COMPANION at times. If that is not a LOVE AFFAIR , I don’t know what is.

When I got my first laptop, I almost never sat at my desk again.
then I got my Chromebook for $199.00 and just got on it and start using it, but it comes with a tutorial. What defines a Chromebook? All chromebooks have an OS operating system. They weigh from 2.6 to 3.6 inches, usually, are from 11 x 10 inches to 13 x 11 inches. They are highly portable and mine fits in my PURSE EASILY.

The Chromebook is PORTABLE but NOT usually MOBILE; now that is another big definer of computing devices. The mobiles have use their own internet service when away from available wifi. MOBILES are very EXPENSIVE to purchase and to use, where as the PORTABLES computing devices are limited but COST very LITTLE by comparison.

I have heard “don’t brag on your horse” others may want to ride it. I am BRAGGING on my Chromebook because I want you to BENEFIT as I have, but don’t brag on it; the loved and adored ones may grab onto it and never let it go. I have a friend who had numerous computing devices but he needed a notebook. The size is in the middle of all the other computers. The ease of use is amazing. Chromebooks are built to be quick and simple and they are. My brand is Samsung and why on earth would I pay more than $199.00 or about that for a computer. You know they become OBSOLETE very quickly.

ALL computing devices fall into two categories basically, portable and mobile. A desk top computer is not portable. Laptops are portable. Smartphones and some iPODs are MOBILE. If you go to babysit the grands, you need a PORTABLE. If you do or think you need CONNECTED EVERYEHERE ALL the TIME you need a MOBILE and remember they are VERY EXPENSIVE.

Most of us want OUR OWN computer and we want NO ONE messing with it, so buy a cheap, portable one that makes you HAPPY, is RELIABLE and SERVES your PURPOSES.
Remember, a lot of extras COSTS A LOT. ENJOY and RIDE the INFORMATION Highway and enjoy and stay in TOUCH.

  1. Oh Rose, if you only knew how much I hate techy stuff…….well up to date I have a Laptop, think they must be a lot more expensive than in your country, middle of the road one paid £430 for it, I have now bought a tablet, not sure yet if it will do what I require of it,ie connection away from home, apparently I can use my smart phone as a router for it, that remains to be seen…… last week I bought a 6 inch smart phone which I am assured will do exactly the same as my smaller one, just a bigger screen, therefore allowing me to see more of anything I want to see on it. If I want to learn anything new, off I trot to the drop in centre where they will show me what I need to know, one thing at a time, but I have learned how to do some things myself just by messing….xx

      1. Star I’m sure you’re aware of portable hot spots. Any tech store sells them. They do have a monthly fee. I wouldn’t pay it but if one wants to stay connected it’s cool. I have one of the phone plans with unlimited data. That’s another option if you can surf on a phone with ease.

  2. Greenwell can you elaborate on this a little bit more, I tried an ipad once on a two week trial, but connecting to the internet away from home was hit and miss, that’s all I’m trying to do……..keep getting told different things…..

      1. At the particular place I need it at it’s hit and miss, but my smart phone does ok there mostly, there is wifi in the pub over the road…….computer wouldn’t pick that up with the dongle…..

  3. I brought about a year or so ago ,a Galaxy note, I thought it would suffice when I couldnt take my old heavy lappy , when I went out , it fits in my purse , but it is only useful for games, e mails are hit and miss, camera is excellent , but hard to put pics on the lappy to send , i can use it for CHATTERS ,BECASUE IT HAS A DIFFERENT I.P. AND ROB TAKES ME OFF BECAUSE HIS SITE DOES NOT RECOGNISE THE NEW I.P. SO CANT USE IT FOR THAT , I CAN USE IT FOR F/B,BUT SKYPE ON IT IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE, SO MOST HAVE THEIR USES , HOWEVER I AM NEVER GOING TO BUY ANOTHER I PAD OR NOTE …..

    1. This is just my opinion but I just upgraded to a new smart phone with 16 gb.
I can do everything with this phone I can do with a laptop. Takes awesome photos and video as well. The memory es more than enough for what I use it for. The phone is a Galaxy S series and very affordable. If you can’t use a pad or laptop a good phone with good data reception is a great alternative.

      1. jsmile, as I understand the smart phone is expensive. I think the data costs $15.00 a gigagbyte. I think this is a lot of money, since I have no real need for any data. I am trying to figure out why my grandson manages to use 4 gigabytes, when he has very little time and less money and he has wifi where he usually is, home, work, and school.
It is easy to have apps running using data and not even know it.

  4. Lani, I did the blog because I think the Chromebook would be a good fit for many members here. It is great for e-mail social networking and looking up information. You can do most documents that most older people need. It is fast and simple. It updates without taking over the computer. It will fit in a purse, but it is large enough to feel normal. It is not a mobile, but I think chromebooks may be made as mobiles, but most of the people here don’t need that.

  5. I am going to have to check it out. I had not heard of it before. Ten years ago, I thought I was never be a person who stayed connected via phone or ipads or whatever they are called. Now I sleep with it next to my bed. We have something in common, I love mine! If I looked at yours, would that be cheating? lol

    1. Linda,I keep mine beside the bed or under it and I am glad I am not the only one. go to your local office supply store and check them out. I find the salespeople there the most helpful in explaining and letting you try it and letting you come back after you purchase it. Check out the sales before you go looking. The Chromebook is very competitive and prices don’t vary a lot.
Linda, I think you may just love a Chromebook. I do.

  6. My dear friends,

I am absolutely old fashioned in comparison to what you are. I owe an old handy which can only do one thing; I can phone with it. That’s all. But it has a big advantage to all the new smartphones i.e.; it can’t be localized nor spied on.

My believe goes like this; all the apps make the brain stagnant like the GPS! I myself have to remember my way to go to the destination I want to drive to and I keep the route in mind inclusive alternative route for the case of closed roads etc.etc. That alone protects of getting stranded in a lake or forest as happend to an other driver recently.

    1. Michael, Is someone tracking you? LOL If you haven’t tried the joys of these machines, you may not miss them. If our hearing goes, we may need to text.
I am just talking about a small special type of computer. I don’t have any of the mobile devices. I do have a GPS. I have a cell phone and that is all I really need.

  7. Oh , I LOVE my iPad ! I had it for 5 years …it’s chock a block with photos nearly 7000 of them !
I use my iPad for everything you would use a lap top or desk top .
It’s simple to use and I take it wherever I go .
I do private chatting with it ,but it’s not good if I want to go into the chat room with a group ,simply because the keyboard takes more than half the screen , other than that I have no problems .

  8. I copied this from Google.
Any Chromebook you pick up will have Wi-Fi, but if you’re someone who’s frequently on the road, the addition of 3G/4G data plan options may be crucial to your staying connected (and may be easier on your wallet than using paid Wi-Fi options in the long run).

One thing I’m a bit hesitant of is the auto update and storage of personal info on the cloud. I personally rather back it up locally so I have more control.

    1. All I am looking for is to get connected when I am at my caravan, without going in the bar, such an hardship is that..lol……have used cloud when I have been on the ferry to Ireland……so now you tell me that is not safe to use..??

      1. starlette, I googled the cloud security issue and it is very complicated.I don’t put my financial docucents or that kind of thing on my chromebook. The security of cloud storage depends on the storage provider .I am sure gooogle chrome has the best storage available. Security, how secure is the mail. If anyone along the line want to read, they could.

    2. jsmile.Doesn’t that cloud storage sound like science fiction. I do. I guess you can download these files to an external storage device as you do any files. BUT, I don’t know. For serious work you may need a regular computer.

  9. My iPad is WIFI only …I take it with me everywhere I go ,and very rarely I need to pay to get connected .
These days you’ll find there are hot spots everywhere . So really I don’t find that I need 3G / data .
My iPad will need updating sometime in the near future . It’s 5years old …I will probably get another same just a newer model .
Unless of course someone convince me otherwise !

  10. nmod, Just survey what is there that meets your needs first. How much does the ipad cost? I think they cost twice as much as a chromebook and a chromebook is larger and still easy to carry. I don’t want to convince you, I just want you to have information and be happy.

  11. Rose I have not had the Chromebook but have had the laptop and Samsung note pad (kinda like the ipad). I love the pad because it has touchscreen and a blue tooth keyboard. I still like my android phone because I have cell phone anyway so I just make the best of both with the phone. I just purchased a Samsung S4. I know its a couple models back but it does everything I could want a pad to do and more. I’m cheap so I refuse to have the “current” because tomorrow it too will be out dated. I have a very good month to month plan with unlimited data and still have WIFI at home. I find that usually most phones are cheaper and much faster when surfing the web and the cameras are just awesome.

  12. Hello Rose,

please note as follows; any step, any search you take with google will be added to your profil. That could ccause some trouble for you if google sales your profil to online shops i.e. That’s can but it is no must.
