Head Man’s Morning Tea

Life in New Guinea was never dull,it was full of surprises even if it was just the way that you were greeted as you walked along the tracks,
”Morning Missus yopella go long bush”
“Yes Mepella go long bush “.
This was called out as we walked further into the bush. They are a friendly lot and you could hear them calling across the valleys to one another.

I moved to another station where their was another nurse and Priest ,also we had three nuns on this station .It was a lot bigger place and the Priest was one of the first to come to the area,so he new a lot,but not about money,His idea of filing was throw everything on his desk and hope it was there if he needed it,cheques as well.I decided to help him one day and clean it up,what a mistake.

He wanted me to bank all the cheques for him,so to find them I had to go through all the letters that had arrived in the last month or so.I filed everything in order and placed them in files and left the office neat and tidy, well what I thought was tidy, never thought a thing about it again.Father came home one day and went in and let out a scream ,
“Who has been messing up my office”
“Messing your office I cleaned it up for you “
“But I cant find anything now “
“Look in the Files then”
“I cant go around looking for files I don’t have time for that”.
this is a polite way to put this as it ended up in more words then I am prepared to say.I never cleaned his office again .

To get back at me ,he said that I had to entertain the head man of the village, to morning tea.It would be a dressed up affair and that I had to put on a real good spread.
“I can do that I am a good hostess and good cook”,no worries .
It was set for the next week,so I got to work and cleaned the place and got out all the best table cloths and things, cooked up a storm.I often caught a smile on Fathers face ,thought that he was pleased with me at last.

The morning of the morning tea ,I was up early down at the clinic ,to feed the babies that I had there needing looking after.I rushed through all my chores, and hurried back to the house to get things ready, this was going to be one great bash,I was going to do this properly. This was the head man and we had to be on time and dressed in all our finery,Father was telling me this so many times .I could not let him down.

I had invited the Nuns as well ,they arrived looking all clean and smiling,I had made a new dress and so had the other nurse there.Father had made an effort, well at least he wasn’t in his shorts, had put on long pants and white shirt.
Father then started to tell everyone where we would be sitting in the room.He made a point of telling me, as I was the hostess ,I would have to sit opposite the head man.I can do that I thought no worries.I sensed a feeling of amusement in the room, but thought that maybe they were all amused at how serious I was at carrying out this morning tea.It was going to be the best morning tea I could put on.

The head man arrived with his support team, about four of them,Father introduced us to him.He was shown his chair and he walked over to it.Here I need to tell you he was wearing an overcoat, very unusual I know it gets cold in the mountains but most of the people wear shorts or a lap lap wrapped around themselves, with shirts.Father had placed me directly opposite his chair, his helper took off his coat,I nearly fell off my chair,as he had not one stitch of clothing on.He had his penis threaded with big shells four or five, of them my eyes nearly fell out of my head. I didn’t know where to look,I looked at Father He was looking smug ,I knew he had done this on purpose .
“How was I going to carry this off without blinking an eye “.I can do this I told myself,
So I got up and served him his tea hoping I wouldn’t spill any on his penis,I could see the commotion that would cause.I continued to serve all the tea and got through the morning without a mishap.thank God .

The head man thanked me for a wonderful morning tea, and invited me back to his village for a sing sing,I thanked him and showed him out the room.
Father just said that he enjoyed his morning tea and that I had done a wonderful job, with that they all burst out in fits of laughter saying ,I should have seen my face ,it was priceless .
“”It was ok for you Father but I couldn’t look anywhere,my eyes were drawn to him,you sat me right were I could see nothing but you know” Oh that morning tea was a talk of many a night and visitor ,he played it for all it was worth.I never lived it down.

      1. Hello Macarthy – I had to respond to your story as I also spent a good deal of time in PNG – A very strange occurrence took place when I was producing a recording the PNG Police Band(under Chief Inspector Tom Shacklady Who came from Yorkshire!)
When the recording was completed I needed a photograph for the album – we decided on one of their Fanfare Trumpeters – so I set off with a guide
(A Policeman) who suggested a spot just inside the prison grounds – we were all three of us taken into custody at the prison for trespassing – in spite of two Policemen escorting me – well that was PNG!
Have a nice day – Kind regards Drummer
