afghanistan military scammers
Hi all,
I just want to make you aware of these scams, should you be messaged by someone, who then wants you to go off site and use Google hangouts or a private email address. These men come on very strong, quickly building up your chat and calling you honey and saying nice things over the course of a few days. They pose as widowers, or just soldiers. They’ll build you up, telling you they want to get together and meet you and live with you, or whatever you want to hear really. (When you want to meet someone, you’ll believe anything.)
Anyway, after a week or so, they’ll play on your sympathy, saying they’re ‘out on a mission’ then they eventually get round to what they’re really after!
MONEY, OR SOME FORM OF CONSUMER GOODS. My ‘friend’ asked me for 2 mobile phones, 1 for him and 1 for his good friend, who he’d promised 1 to, before he returns to the UK. When I said if he sent me the money, I would send him the phones, he then starts playing with your heart strings, making out you’re disappointing him etc etc. IT’S ALL A SCAM AND DON’T BE FOOLED BY ANY OF IT.
They’ll even send you pics of themselves – usually good looking guys. PLEASE EVERYONE, DON’T GET SUCKERED. There’s a website with a gallery of pics you can check – just type in Afghanistan Military Scams.
I’m sorry and embarassed to say I nearly fell for it but something made me check it out. If I can stop even 1 person from parting with their money, then I’m glad I posted this. This man made contact with me on senior chatters!!
Tonight, I’m nursing my somewhat bruised ego and smashed confidence but I still have my hard, 2 jobs earned worth of cash intact.
Grrrrrrrrrrr.
I’m so glad you stopped before falling into their trap. I think a lot of people are fooled. Congratulations on figuring it out!!!
Well done. We do get them here occasionally and if they are clever, as is often the case, they do slip thorough Admins fingers. However it is people like yourself who report them that help us stop them from scamming people and we can investigate ourselves and remove them when found out. We recently had one who was a paid up member which is very unusual with scammers but we managed to remove him with proof of what he was doing. The important thing is if they mention money or sending stuff to them you can almost guarantee they are a scammer.
That is terrifying; we need to be careful who we befriend. With all that is happening around the world… one has to be cautious. Glad to hear that you were not fooled.
Glad to hear your instincts kicked in, don’t be embarrassed, well done for figuring him out. It’s a learning experience. Thank you for passing on your concerns about the scammers out there.
Hi and thanks for nice replies. These people go to any lengths to fool you . I sent him proof of what he is doing, along with his picture on the scammers wall of shame . This morning I got an email asking why I had blocked him and that I believed all this before he got a chance to prove himself. That’s a new low!!!
This scammer is now going to get loads of scams himself ?
Mischevious 13, Good for you. I think this same man contacted me but I didn’t give him my email address. Where is the scammer’s wall of shame where you posted his picture? I didn’t know S.C. had a scammer’s wall of shame where you could post a person picture. I know of another such man on S.C. but he is not in Afghanistan but lives here in the USA. I didn’t give him my email address but talked to him on S.C. and realized that what he was telling me was not the truth so just stopped talking to him on here. He has been on here in 4 month’s but if I see he has been on here I am going to report him . So glad this person was removed and again we all have to be really careful. Thanks again for sharing your story.
Hi Annemarie. The scammers wall of shame is on the Internet, not on S.C.
Type in Afghanistan Military scammers and up comes a few pages. Look for the one with all the pics.
Thank you . I looked and found Face of Military Dating Scams- The Wall of Shame. Is that the one you used as there are other sites on there and want to know which one you went under to post his picture. Thank you.
Congratulations Misschevious for having the courage to write of your experience. The world is full of people who want to get money for little effort. The Web has opened up a worldwide dishonest canvass. People have been caught booking holidays that fail to materialize, buying non existent cars and even houses that are not owned by the ‘seller’. The very old axiom ‘if it looks too good to be true it usually is’ this can also apply to meeting new people. I was about to write, ‘ we are lucky to have such a watchful team of administrators’ however our security has nothing to do with luck – it is safer here because of the commitment and hard work Rob and his team undertake. Thanks for this and may we all keep awake and watchful for each other.
Hello Misschievious – Congratulations on your blog and extra congrats for handling the problem in the way you did. I know we often get calls from a supposed Technician telling us that he has checked out our computer and that it needs urgent attention – our standard reply is that we don’t have a computer – This seems to work!
Kind regards Drummer
Good on you, I had one of those fellows contact me through Facebook, after a few well chosen questions from me he disappeared. They are rotters, thanks for the warning.
Any chatters who run a IMAC with OX-S or El Capitan.should beware of ads popping up espousing MacKeeper or MacCleaner claiming your computer may be corrupted in some way…..Ignore them ! (Im afraid they wont go away nor give up) They are malware ! Will only cause you grief and cost you money.
I found out the hard way 🙁
Wall of shame is all well and good…the trouble is the photos of the military guys have been stolen from their Facebook pages….not only can your life be destroyed, but our military men and women who have had their identities stolen. One can spot scammer language right away if one knows what to look for.
my sister was very nearly taken in , she thought she was talking to an oil worker .. from Norway ..handsome man ..i was the suspicious one and i knew you can put a picture in Google image and it will give the identity of who the photo is ..so i found out it was the picture of a well known skier ..in reality it was a AFRICAN in an internet cafe .. the good part of it was she had lost 2 stone in weight during this period due to the thought she was going to meet up with this handsome man ..
A good blog – an very important warning – these scammers are everywhere. I am tired of blocking and rejecting the same creeps on Skype. Today I have blocked 8 supposed ‘contacts wanting friendships’ and as you note – many are supposedly ‘military’.
when I contacted Skype to complain – there were numerous complaints about these intrusions, but seems only way to avoid it is to either use a ‘pay for skype’ service or keep deleting! So, it is a widespread problem on a global scope. Message is we must all be on our guard whether on a what is regarded as a ‘relatively safe’ site such as SC or locations such as Skype, etc.
Good work, Mischievious! – and thanks for the alert.
