A tale of unrequited love.

It was at a charity affair in aid of distressed daughters of defrocked clergymen that I first set eyes on Fiona Trefusis. I trembled like a welsh rarebit at the height of it’s frenzy at that first glimpse and when introduced my heart fell at her feet and it had welcome written on it. Fiona seem’d to accept my attentions for we danced often during the evening and when I suggested a future lunch at the ‘Crushed Pansy’, the restaurant with a soul, she accepted readily. Over the next few weeks I haunted the street on which Fiona lived hoping to catch a further glimpse of her and , perhaps, arrange another tryst.

It was Archie Snelling who told me of the arrangement twixt Fiona and Cuthbert Prescott, heir to the Prescott baked potato Empire and pickled egg enterprise, and upon hearing that news my heart sank for I was merely an articled clerk with the legal firm of Pleezum, Squeezum, Filth and Foulenough.

At every opportunity I mentioned to Fiona that Kind hearts and simple faith carried more value than Coronets and Norman blood but she refused to be swayed and in the end chose wealth beyond honest worth…………..To this day I regret that not a line of her writing nor a lock of her hair do I possess.
