The Finish Line

It is common at this time of year for us to become overly maudlin as we remember those who have left this earthly life and moved on. Those of us who have reached the majority of our years know more loved ones who are gone than those who remain. That is a basic fact of life. How can we be filled with joy as revelers shout, “bappy new year!”

Let us look at this as a marathon race. Our loved ones have already run their race. They stand now on the other side of the finish line, awaiting us. They are cheering us on. Applauding our efforts. There is no sorrow or sadness or pain among them. Their pride is with us…how well we run our race.

Some of us will drag our feet, not quite running forward. Afraid to move on. Afraid to live.
Some of us will run like raging bulls. Reckless and unconcerned.
Some of us will run with a hopeful heart, and helping hand. We will reach out to raise up our fellow runners who have stumbled along the way.

I, for one, will run gladly towards that finish line. I will cross it happily for I desire to walk and talk once again with those who have preceded me. In order to do that I believe that I must run this race with love, laughter, and compassion. Only then will I hear the voice of my Judge say, “That was a race well run.”

Happy New Year dear friends.
Love, Jackie
