Another Birthday

I have nothing profound to say. I am not waiting for retirement and medical benefits. My 70th year was one of incredible discoveries, adventures in dating again, and growth in understanding and acceptance. Most of what is good for us is not pleasant so it was a year of challenges and confusion, and some crying. How do I smile through this year? How do any of us smile through these senior years? Hey, how do these birthdays feel to you all.
SC members member’s special birthday wishes amazed me with the thoughtfulness of each and I thank one and all. Also, special remembrances of all in my real life gladdened my spirit, but I also think that I am about ready to pretend the birthday didn’t happen. LOL.

  1. You and me both bloom..my birthday was a non event…spent it alone as I couldn’t afford to go out..had no friends I could invite over..feeling blue most of the day…I don’t know, but I don’t think you’re supposed to cry on your birthday are you?

    1. Val ,In my opinion it’s possible to do something special on your birthday without spending to much ..you have to make the decision to do it and it will happen …
For example if you put aside a dollar a day from now to your next birthday.
You would have about $ 360 to go out and do something special on your day.
Because …life is what happens while you are crying …don’t let it pass you by .
      Cheers my friend xx

    2. Val. I am so sorry. That was rough. I did enough and I was lucky in that. I hope you have better luck this year. I am so sorry val that life is so unhappy for you. I am not on cloud nine myself.

  2. Here is my advices.. Enjoy what you have.. Don’t worry about what others think.. If you can get out and enjoy life with another.. I do mean enjoy.. Do what you wanted to do when you were young.. see what it about.. if it feels good.. then more than likely it is.. don’t fall in love but enjoy love.. Lou

  3. Happy Belated Birthday Rose …it’s good to hear you had a great day !
What do you mean by saying that most that is good for us it’s not pleasant ? I can’t think of many things that are good and unpleasant …unless you are talking about going to hospital or breaking up from a loving yet toxic relationship …
Ever since I’ve turned 60 ( 4 years ago ) I started to celebrate my birthdays , ( I never did before ) now I always make sure I do something special on that day even if I’m on my own .
I always have a drink a piece of cake and a picture taken . And I spend my birthday in a different place each year and try to make it memorable .
Why pretend it doesn’t happen ? We can’t change it …so embrace it ! This year I went to New Zealand for ten days and I had a fabulous time …and yes I went alone and didn’t meet with anybody I knew … I went to places I wanted to visit met with some other travelers and had a wonderful time !
How do I smile through the year ? Well I sometimes cry too , but for every tear I shed I realize that I have so much more to be grateful for …that in itself puts a smile on my face …
Happiness is within ourselves …no outsider will ever bring happiness and hand it over to us …they can certainly enhance it and make us feel great but at the end of the day we are responsible for our own … ( my opinion only ) 🙂

    2. Nmod, Have you heard that everything good is illegal, immoral, or fattening that is some of what I meant, but also unless you suffer, you may not learn compassion and understanding. Suffering can make us a better person or it can make us mean and bitter.

      1. No , I don’t remember to have heard that expression before …but if anything illegal …immoral …or fattening affects you in a negative way then it’s clear that it isn’t ” good ” for you ….simple ! 🙂

      1. Thank you Rose …and you are right it does take determination to enjoy life …and I have plenty of that ! Lol .
I love traveling …and have done some amazing stuff …things like “sipping mint tea with an amazing 85 year old woman who lives in a cave in Morocco ”
” Watched a sunset in the Sahara Desert ” …”rented a studio in Paris and lived there for a month doing my own thing “.i have visited 26 countries …and did it all on my own !
        I don’t have a partner that’s true…but that won’t stop me from enjoying my life …I sleep alone but I’m not alone…if you know what I mean . 🙂

  4. Rose i am not too keen on birthdays either, not because i spend them alone, i don’t, i have lovely cards and gifts, but it is the passing of time and another year older, who in all honesty wants to get older, but i do remind myself that there are many who are no longer with us who would readily swop places…..and you know what……..It’s better to be one foot above the ground, than six foot under it. x
